Anybody tried using a 944 oil filter to fix the 993tt intermittent smoking problem?

Just use the re-designed genuine Porsche engine filter.

I heard that even the new 993 filter (.03 suffix) can still cause the problem even if correctly fitted. A Porsche technician advised to use the 944 filter (genuine Porsche). I've never heard of this possible solution.

Why complicate the issue.. People can use whatever filter they like. If the factory filter fails, most of the time it is immediate.. Spin it off and install a new filter.. This time make sure it is seated correctly and not crushed.. If you have over 60K on your car and your leakdown is south of 10% and your turbochargers are smoked, no filter will stop oil passing out your turbochargers..

Kevin - what is the correct spec for tightening the filter? My recollection is that it is somewhat more than handtight but not a lot more.

Basically, engine oil on lip seal. then no more than 3/4 of a turn after you have made positive contact with the seal to engine..

I doubt if there is a problem with my Turbos. Firstly, the smoking started immediately after a major service, secondly the smoke clears after a few minutes. From then on the exhaust is crystal clear at any RPM. Looks like oil is piling up against the turbo seals after sitting for a few days which should be stopped by the valve in the oil filter (if it is functioning correctly) but correct me if I'm wrong.

Just checked with the main Porsche Service shop and they said they sometimes go thru 4 or 5 filters during a service until all is well. They also said that an equivalent spec filter by MANN works every time. Gets more interesting as time goes on.

I bought an 03 suffix OEM filter today and it has a manufacture date of September 2005 (4 months ago). Is that deemed a later one or an earlier one?
