What are the "quirks" of the 993 TT?

Kevin:_
"But here's the quirky side of the 993TT... I DON'T GIVE A **** .... the car is just so bloody good it's all worth it! I want to drive it every time I see it. When I stop at a cafe somewhere for coffee I park so I can stare at it. When I wash it the experience is almost sexual. It's just such a forgiving, awesome, mindblowingly fast, practicle, every day, sexy, sure footed machine."
And I thought I was the only one!!

"the dual mass flywheel/clutch is not good for more than 30k miles": tell that to the guy in San Francisco with almost 200k miles on his original clutch and flywheel. Clutch wear is a function of the skill of the driver (with some consideration for highway or stop and go use). Waldo has 70k on his original clutch and is STILL going strong. Rufus got a new clutch at the Ruf rebuild at 86k miles.

Well - it depends where you drive now. If you live in Texas or California (LA excluded) and you do lots of cross country driving - then you're right. After all, you can do 300 miles in 6th without ever hitting the clutch on an interstate. If you live in Manhattan with constant gridlock - then I beg to differ. The problem as I understand it is not the clutch disk or the flywheel. The problem is the pressure plate. Over time it stiffens. Every time you press on the clutch it heats up and when you release it cools. Over the course of thousands of shifts it starts to stiffen, and it puts more strain on the clutch hydraulics. As it stiffens, its range of motion becomes slightly more limited as well. You know how sometimes if you shift from 2nd into 1st at about 10-15mph it will whine? It won't do that after the clutch replacement because the new pressure plate has a wider range of motion. You see when they go - they don't slip - they become more difficult to shift.
This is only what my mechanic told me - and he was a Porsche factory engineer for 11 years. If he told me something incorrect - then please tell me because I then probably spent the money for nothing.

Peter,
I can't speak to the "pressure plate stiffening" phenomen that you mention... perhaps that is so. But I'm not sure that 993TT clutch wear is any different than any other car... therefore not a "quirk". I mentioned that "Clutch wear is a function of the skill of the driver (with some consideration for highway or stop and go use)", so driving in gridlocked Manhattan certainly qualifies for that consideration... still, I stand by my assertion that the 993TT clutch holds up as well as any other.

Kevin,
If that Guards Red 993TT meets your criteria, consider it very closely. You will be way better off with a Rennlist recommended or enthusiast car than a pig in a poke. Sports seats! Nice. And the most common wear items (suspension/clutch) are already upgraded to a high level. Me like.

Yeah the owner also has a 930, so he did not drive the TT all that much. I did all the installation work on the car for the LWF and suspension. The car is pretty sweet with the front Euro bumper and all. His was one of 3 Guards Red 993TTs I had in the shop at one time for service. I'll have to find that pic. I doubt that ever happened even at a dealer....
