Default air/water intercooler

anyone ever look at the effeciency of the air/air vs. air/water intercoolers?

Heat soak issues aside, I'm wondering if the air/water provides lower temps.

Any links to any article would be great.

Thanks

This one was a good read.

I would assume air/water would provide lower temps, however that would be a real problem in a car w/limited engine space available already and also providing the needed plumbing to effectively do it. Add weight = reduced power or cooler operating temp = more power or loss of it from heat soak.

I feel like if they didn't do it to begin with, it wasn't worth doing or was only a trade off with no tangible gains

TTP ran a water/air charge cooler system on their turbo conversions which they carried out on the N/A 993, it was developed so that the stock retractable wing could stay in place. The more powerful version was given a bigger wing and air/air i/c.
9ff used a charge cooler water/air in their 388kph 996 based tt, again, could be for aerodynamics since that car retained its smoth rear end and had a big radiator at the front for the water. My tuner just laughed when I asked about charge coolers - they would not consider them for race motors so.....

If you were going to make a drag car, you could put 50 lbs of ice in a box and "deep chill" the charge air.. You would be better off installing water misters and spraying your intercooler, and activating at .6 bars.. You would have a better effect..

There's a So CAl company that did this to a local very fast 930 race car. I asked the owner and he stated that it gave a noticable cooler intake temp. He also used in the brake ducts. Here's the site:

JR....thanks for the link. The system is pretty reasonably priced...like under $250 for all the bits and bobs...something to think about.
