Default TRAY UNDER ENGINE?

Does anybody use the factory tray under the engine?
my shop told me to take it off because it retains so much
heat in the engine area. please advise your thoughts.
thank you!

This topic has come up quite a few times. If you search, you will find alot of the old discussions regarding this.

The short answer is: YES. Removing your tray will reduce heat build-up. The downside is that you will have a MUCH dirtier undercarriage. Your turbos, piping, and everything else will collect alot of road grime. This is the price you pay for less heat.

throw it away! not only is it a heat trap, it makes oil change just that much more difficult. porsche stopped making the belly pan cover on 996's

Get rid of it. Lie under your car every other weekend wit a brush and clean your engine , trust me it's very satisfying after your done with it. Most of my freinds or all got rid of it the 1st thing.

I use mine for a bird feeder. If you get lots of snow, go snow boarding.

Get it off! My 97's in the shop right now getting fitted for a new valve cover and gaskets due to excess heat from the tray--hope the extended warranty covers it.

So what is the exact reason for removing it?
I can understand that some people might get some heat issues. But I dont really think it's that much of an issue. I've kept mine, to avoid dirt. Also should this affect the drag under the car, when removing it?

Rassell,

I would be surprised if removing the tray seriously hurts aerodynamics at anything less than top speed. I've had my car over 150 mph at the track on repeated occasions with no sense of lifting, turbulence, etc.

Sure, but what would the benefit be?

Originally intended to reduce engine noise. The unfortunate side effect is that it traps heat too. This can be especially harmful to turbo cars as they really need the circulation to cool off.....
