My car is in the garage at the moment having its annual service. I mentioned to the service manager that I have noticed a definite 'click' sometimes when steering, say, out of a junction. When stationary, if you push the wheel up and down you can hear the click, as if there is a slight amount of play in the column.
My car is a 96 with 60k miles.
Has anyone else had this?
Thanks a lot
Martyn.

could it be that the column bushing is going bad? I know this is fairly common on older 911's with higher mileage but haven't heard of it on the 993. Solution (if that is the problem) is using a 928 part which can be installed after the steering wheel is removed. see this thread

Your clockspring for your airbag will also make noise if it is failing! Basically a large spring that is wound runs on a bushing that allow you to have current pass from your stationary column to a rotating steering wheel..
Keep on bumping these lost threads.. sometimes we just miss them by mistake.. Sorry

Thanks for the replies.
The dealer is going to strip the column next week. Looking at the elemental break down drawing of the column, the OPC tells me there are 4 or 5 bushes near the top of the column that are held in place with by a circlip. They think it is possible some of these have worn, or cracked causing the play in the steering wheel.
You know, it is quite sad that I have had to apply such serious pressure on the dealer to investigate this problem (plus the stutter under acc on the other thread) deeply. They were trying to fob me off at the start.
Have a good weekend all.
Martyn.

There is also an alignment clip on the clockspring that will click if it gets bent slightly. It is easily bent back to the correct position, but lots of trial and error to get it right.
