Default Another Tire Question

Gentleman,

Sorry for the following novice questions...I'm new to this and want to treat my car right...

- Which "summer" tires would you recommend for my 97 993TT...Bridgestone's SO2s or Pirelli P-Zeros?

- Also, assuming 225/40 and 285/30s are th way to go, yes?

- What's the difference between the SO2s and SO2As?

- Outside of the NE region, any DE or Autocross track events you recommend in NY or NJ? How are the New England Events for those of you who have gone?

Thank you!!!

Todd

Viken, our resident expert in all things, raves about the S02As, and doesn't much care for either of the other two choices. A couple of less conventional thoughts for a dry tire.. BFG KDs... the closest thing you can get to an "R" compound for ultimate dry grip. Wear, of course, suffers. I also like the Yokohama AVS Sports, which are not too bad a wet tire also.

I have had both the P Zeros and the SO'2s and both have been ok except for the tire wear being poor. I'm hoping the SO2A's that Viken talks about will improve that when the time comes.

1) The Pirelli P-Zero Asimmetrico (NOT Rosso) is a great tire if you can still find it in the N1 or N2 specification. The N3 is the last type and it's okay but not a good as the previous versions.

2) Yes.

3) The S-02A is a completely different tire and much better than the S-02. That and the Pilot Sport Rib are excellent choices for the 993 Turbo.

I was looking at available tires at Tire Rack's site and noticed one tire that I've never seen any comments on - the Bridgestone Potenza RE050A. Anybody?

Viken....I'm nearly due for rears, fronts still better than 60% on my SO2's. Would there be issues with going to the SO2A's on the rear?? Not going to track the car. Thanks.

Also I notice the Sport Ribs don't come in 285's...would the 295's fit?

I made the switch from SO2's to the Pilot Sport Rib last fall and to date, they are working well. The extra bonus is that the rib extends a bit past the actual rim which in theory might save some damage to the wheel finish.

I have loved the michelin pilot's in the past!, s02 are average to below average, so2a I
am sure is much better. I think it is tough to beat the michelin's!

Seljan & Woodster...did you both go with 225/40's and 295/30's and were there any issues with the rears with the change in size?

Not ideal and I wouldn't do it. But, others have done it and I don't see why you can't. Another option is to buy another pair of S-02 rears now and change all four the next time you need new rears. Fronts wear at about half the rate as the rears.

Also I notice the Sport Ribs don't come in 285's...would the 295's fit?
They did come in 285's. Perhaps, they are out of stock. The 295's would work otherwise, but will be of no benefit. I would rather go to another tire than settle for another size.

Thanks Viken

FYI-You guys might want to check w/Costco on these. MPS2 N1's were $120 a set cheaper than Tirerack which included mounting & balancing. Don't know if these MPSRibs are available thought.

Tom - do you trust Costco's mounting on our expensive wheels?

Viken - you're in SoCal aren't you? Do you see enough rain and/or drive your P-car in the rain to form a wet performance opinion?

The PS2's are only available in 235/40 and 295/30 sizes. Although you could use them, they are a tad too big for the stock wheels. Also, I wouldn't have Costco mount my tires on any car I own.
