If anyone's interested, I have a spare Ruf Turbo R ECU and Ruf cams. However, I can't guarantee they'll make your car into a Ruf unless you can get the other Ruf parts (e.g., cats, 5 bar FPR, air filter, turbos, oil cooler and cam sprockets).

Since I bought my RUF already converted, I don't have first hand experience about their conversion. However, I can tell you that my RUF BTR, with only 426 HP, is the most balanced car I have ever own/driven. As a lot of posts here aluded to already: RUF is never about the highest HP. it is about an engineering package so well mated together that the car performs better than the sum of it's parts.

At the other end of the spectrum, there was an extremely powerful 996tt, Stage 4, ECU, 19" wheels, big brakes and all, that had all the 'correct' bolt-ons on paper. It dynoed out with the HIGHEST HP amongst Porsche shoot-out entrants. However, on the track, it came in at the bottom third in track time, and 1/4 mile times. That's an example of how: not all tuners are born equal. Incidentally, the mods on that 996tt costed more than twice of a RUF package.

I'm sure guys like Todd, Steve, and Andial can put together great cars, but at the end of the day, after they did everything 'right', I bet you the bills will NOT be less than RUF's.

Personally, I'm sold on RUF, not their bolt-on parts, but their engineered conversion packages. There were a few previous threads about tuners of choice, and if I recall correctly, RUF came out on top, by a wide margin.

There a Pantera event on 3/5 -3/6 that is a great group to run your high hp cars with. Its at Willow Springs and its a relaxed atmosphere. Last year Steve Beddor brought his Ruf CTR2 out and we had a great time killing Vipers and real NASCAR's. Hope to see some of the highly acclaimed tunner cars that appear on the board.

Whatever the price for parts works out to be we all have to agree that there is something special about a Ruf porsche. They are not even considered tuners by the US gov't they are a manufactor. When Ruf makes a car it gets its own special VIN. What other "tuner" can say that?

Maybe that is why Ruf does not compete in those "tuner" shootouts. He does not considered his shop to be a "tuner" shop. It might be arrogant, but maybe at this point in his career he can do that. He talks softly and carries a big engine. But he does let his cars be reviewed and they always get great praise. I have read at least three reivews lately of his R-GT RS and expect to see reviews of the new RT-12. Not only for there great speed and thrust but there reliability. I remember one review that stated that RUF has never delievered a car to them that did not work and not many others could say the same.

Finally the Yellowbird did not become famous for its dyno or 0-60 numbers only. It took whatever was thrown at it and still can beat most. We all know absolute numbers are not everything. How else could a 280 hp Porsche stick with a 400 hp Corvette.

wow a long thread...

well you know where i stand on this.... if you can afford it, i say you are crazy not to do it.

something that i believe may be getting a bit lost here...its not ALL about just adding the HP, its also about having a little bit of history. True, the conversion is different than if u had purchased an original VIN RUF. However, you are still getting the German version of Shelby-Cobra type tuning. Who knows if this opportunity will exist years down the road. Its here in Dallas of all places...how convenient.

Interesting that when I met Alois RUF at the RUF grand opening in Dallas he said "at RUF we build and tune cars first for quality and longevity, second for performance"...

By the way, you know he will be at MotorSport Ranch PCA DE on 2/26, right?....

Nice comparison on the Vin issue- Definitely a value holder in that respect.

Vince,

Actually this is a chnace to 'refresh' your engine, so a high-mile sample would benefit more.

My PO did his BTR conversion with 75k miles on his car. RUF tore down the engine, check all parts for spec, and my PO took the chance to upgrade to titanium con-rods and other internal components. This ensure the fresh engine is even more heat-proof, whick of course is the enemy in a 'blown' engine configuration.

Hope this helps.

If you go with Ruf, he'll be sure to make your engine bullet-proof, 10K or 100K miles. However, he may want to do a valve job on high-mileage engines (the exhaust valve guides wear). I've had my Turbo R for almost 30K very hard miles and it's bullet proof. Even after 30K miles, it's still nearly as fast as a CGT.
