Tony, I'm sure that you've probobly already performed a search, but I experienced the same problem as you. I also re: changed the small (manifold) filter, and it still smoked. I was ready to have turbos rebuilt, but thankfully, I replaced the manifold filter the third time, this time I got the filter from another source. End of problem. I would try another filter from a different source, one that is familar with this problem.

Lance,
Can you tell me where and what filter you used the third time? The first time I used Mahle p/n OC 229 for the engine filter (short one) and this morning I used a Porsche filter p/n 993 107 203 03. Also did you have any oil leak? This morning for the first time I discovered some drips from the right (passenger side) turbo flap. This problem has been going on for about a month now?
BTW, most people look at me like I have three heads when I tell them that I think it might be the filter... does that ever happen to you?

Check the oil level. If I use the gauge inside the car, my car smokes because the oil level is filled too high. My car will leak it out or smoke it out until it drops to a happy level. Then, it doesn't smoke at all, not even after a long hard run on the track.

Stay tuned. Latest word is that this may not be an oil leak at all, but a flaw relating to the left (drivers) side turbo only and the oil siphoning back and leaking into the turbo if the car is left to sit for a longer period. There is another '96 at the shop with the same problem as mine has and they are looking at installing a one-way valve in the oil return on the left turbo.
Not conclusive yet, but does anyone have a similar experience, or more info?

If the car has a oil siphon issue it is related to the damaged oil filter....
If you tighten the filter to much you will unseat the diaphram, thus causing oil to flood the turbochargers.. Again as I have mentioned, pull your plugs to your turbocharger sumps and see how much oil is in them..

Oil filter
I thought the oil filter would only effect the right side? This also seems to have been one-time only. Would the damaged oil filter be a constant problem?

Don, if you look at Tony's pictures you will see leaks from both sides.. He is now in the clear with 3 oil changes later and 2 filter changes. One set being Mahle's which were the culprit... Incorrect filters and damaged filters will lead to problems..

Same bearings, same thrust, same sealing rings, same bearing housings (early production K24's and locations for speed sensors), and same compressor housings...
