Default Gearbox bearing problem

My first post to the forum and would really appreciate some help/advice!
I have been the proud owner of a 1997 993tt for almost 4 years now. Completely stock, 31,000 kms, and in great condition (I’ll post some pictures in the near future). I guess the only ‘punishment’ the car has had during my ownership is 3 track days on the new Dubai Autodrome.
A few weeks ago I had the clutch replaced. On getting the car back I noticed a high pitched whine when accelerating gently. The problem was most evident in 5th and 6th when accelerating from around 2,000 rpm. I have been told that the problem is the 5th & 6th gear bearings, and may have been brought on from hard driving on the circuit. A few questions;

How likely is this, given that these two gears are not used much on the track?
Is it purely a coincidence that the problem arose immediately following a clutch replacement, or could there be an installation issue?
Any recommended upgrades that wont cost an absolute fortune whilst the engine and gearbox are removed?

Be great to get a few words of wisdom. Thanks
