Default need a new muffler - what to get?

i had a little mishap and distroyed my right muffler.
Given i have to buy one right muffler, what should i do? -
i do not want muffler bypasses -as it sounds like a motorboat, but i do want better sound and better airflow.
should I:
1) buy a stock muffler and have my shop slice it open and pull the insides out - sorta like RSR mufflers.
2) get an upgraded muffler - which do u guys recommend? fabspeed, ghl, etc? what is the cost of each of these parts versus 1 stock factory muffler?

Also, what tips should I get?

I have the muffler bypasses, and disagree with your comments about the sound. While this is highly subjective (and yes, a small number of people have removed them because they are too noisy), my opinion is that they are not loud at all, once past the cold start period. Here are the other advantages of the bypasses:
1). they are, relatively speaking, very inexpensive,
2). they look good (Fabspeed have nice tips),
3). they save a bunch of ugly weight, right in the ***-end of the car,
4). they allow a better cooling stream of air to the turbos,
5). they reduce nasty backpressure, and will actually give you a performance increase.

As far as I know, there is no muffler system out there that can do any of those things (except #2).

I got a bypass and cargraphic muffers 2 weeks ago and I am very pleased with the result. The sound is deeper and I can now finally hear the turbo spin.

Albert,

It sounds like you have the Catalytic Convertor bypasses... we're discussing muffler bypasses. Quite a horse of a different color. You should be feeling a much more pronounced performance boost, especially if you have turbo upgrades. I don't think Rob is thinking of the cat bypasses as they are probably not smog-legal in New York. I KNOW they're not legal here in California. Plus they are very expensive compared to the muffler bypasses. (which are perfectly legal).

Id love to have cat bypasses, but im 99% certain that i will not pass NYstate inspections and i dont want to deal with removing and then installing my cats. Also, I'd love to actually hear my turbos spool, but i dont know how to do it.

I have never actually heard a 993tt with muffler bypass... ok, steve,- im willing to be open minded and open-ear ..
Anyone in the nyc tristate area have a 993tt with muffler bypasses? How loud is it?

I have a 993TT with fabspeed muffler bypasses in freehold, NJ. If you're ever down this way PM me and we can meet up somewhere so you can hear them.

For the sound of Fabspeed muffler bypasses, go here http://www.fabspeed.com/993tt.htm and download the short video.

I have fabspeed bypasses on my 97--wouldn't have it any other way! I'm in Short Hills, NJ moving to Holmdel, NJ this weekend. If the weather is ok I'll be moving the car Sat. Get the fabspeeds...best $500 you'll ever spend

Beyond the outright muffler bypass pipes- .... what do you guys suggest?

Which aftermarket muffler is best?? or, should i have my shop slice my stock mufflers open and pull the insides out?

Go listen to Dr.G's or LT1's Fabspeed muffler by-passes. And not just at idle, drive them with the windows up and down. Like LT1 said, best $550. you'll ever spend on the car.

I'm thinking about selling the TT - if I do and the buyer doesn't want the bypasses I can give them to you for a great price. But by all means, you're more than welcome to come hear how they sound while I still have the car.

Not only is the bypass the best money you have spent.....not having mufflers will be the best money you NEVER spent.

Rob,

The reason you can't seem to get a straight answer for better mufflers on this board is that no one has had any significant benefit (sound or performance) from any of the aftermarket mufflers. I guess the more you gut your stock mufflers, the closer they will get to bypasses, but why bother?

ok, ill bite..
1- dr g. - if u sell ure car, im happy to get a good deal on your fabspeeds -thank you.
2- Then, why have several people where said they got a headache from the bypass? i dont want the car to sound like a motorboat, nor a motorcycle. i like the way my c2 sounded with varioram, and id like to hear the turbos more. I understand that turbo cars get quiet when they spool, but id rather hear more sound when the car is working than when the car is idle.
