Default PST2

A company in Germany is selling the "genuine" PST2 software on an IBM laptop with the for $5000 plus shipping. The software is identical to that on the actual porsche PST2, but they claim it is better because instead of using the 486 based processor in the Porsche PST2 their laptop based solution is faster. In addition to being pricey, I have some concerns that it could be a scam. Has anybody bought or considered on of these? I'd be interesed in what people think. Here's the email I got:

Hello,

I'm so sorry for answering, because I was on holiday and .....

Well, he is right that a 486 PC is kinda slow. However, I doubt that the speed is limited so much by the computer. It's not rocket science, so the processor power is not that important. What is the name of the company?

I agree with Rassel's comments. Also, the serial link on the computer for OBD-II is much slower than the processing power of the 486 processor. Is he thinking that an Intel PentiumM 1.7ghz - 2.5ghz processor will "crunch" all those numbers really fast? That would be true if there were a lot of calculations to be made, but that is not the case with this. The application is probably made to look a lot "prettier".

Harry,

See if you can get a German Rennlister to go take a look and cofnirm that this is not a scam. I really trust our Rennlist brothers... I do not trust overseas transactions. You may want to start a new thread asking for a German Rennlister to help. If all else fails, do your transaction through an escrow company OF YOUR CHOOSING. That's really important. Do not let the seller choose the ecrow company... lots of scams going on there.

Keep us posted.

Actually, I'm not sure what company it is. I saw the original ad posted here:

http://www.automotivetools.com/wwwbo...ages/2570.html

and have been emailing with him. I've now asked for references and also if I can pay by credit card.

I'll keep everybody posted about how this plays out.
