Default EVOMS Stage 4 GT vs Ruf 993 Turbo R

I just had a great time comparing my Ruf 993 Turbo R (490 HP) with Nelson's (6speedonline) EVOMS Stage 4 gt (603 HP).

We ran several runs starting in second gear at about 30 MPH and ending at 150 MPH+.

In all runs, the cars were nearly identical. We would either be dead even, or the Ruf would be a car or two ahead, depending on who started first or who shifted faster.

Bottom line is HORSEPOWER DOES NOT EQUAL PERFORMANCE, so forget the dyno and take your cars out to see how fast they really are!

This is not the first time I've seen this. I truly believe 993TTs can be as fast as 996TTs given similar mods.

Bill,

I agree! you can not feel it or see it, until you live it.

Bill
With similar weight cars with similar frontal aeras and gearing, Horsepower does equal performance, you know you are opening up a can of worms here
My guess is your Ruf has nearer 540fwhp and the EVO has similar.

Well apparantly the official 0-100mph times for the 993TT and 996TT are 9.2 and 10.2 making the 993tt quicker, in my opinion in day to day.

I think the 996 can reach better top speeds especially with tuning kits, and the 993TT is the quicker accelerating car at lower speeds.

No offense, but I think you may have it backwards if you are talking stock. Most of the release times I have seen has the 996TT at 9.2 with the 993TT around 10, but 9.2 seems to be the official for the 996TT as it is used over and over again. Now real world testing numbers may be different and vary, but 9.2 is something definitely associated with the 996TT.

Is the gearing different on the 993TT and the 996TT? Both cars are pretty close in terms of weight, and if there really is a 113 HP advantage on the 996TT, it would definitely pull on the 993TT with less power.

I suspect that Ruf under-rates their cars, and EVO may be a little wishful

Or maybe one of you is running in 87 octane and the other on C14

Or maybe the driver of the 996 is 400 pounds, and you are super model think at 85 pounds.

RUF cars have their own transmissions with different gearing than the stock Porsche units. RUF selects gears to maximize the power band of the motor.

So, while the EVOM Stage 4 could have higher dynoed numbers, the RUF gearings and shift points could make some difference.

Bill did not list the respective torque numbers for each car. It is possible that while the EVOM Stage 4 has higher HP numbers, but similar torque as the RUF. RUF has BIG torque, and usually at lower RPM to boot. That's why legends has it that RUF ponies are bigger than other ponies. This is a similar situation between the 996 GT3 and the 996 Carrera. The GT3 has higher HP numbers, but the torque numbers are similar. If that is indeed true, theN between the gears and the torque, the RUF could conceivably stay with the EVOM.

That's the difference between bench and road racing. Bench numbers may not reflect what happens in real life.

Just my two cents.

Also, Ruf's are just top notch cars and in my opinion, a step a head of the other tuners or bolt on 700 hp package kits. Now a Ruf 993 v. a Ruf 996 would be a good comparison. A real Ruf is just so much more than slapping on an Evo Kit or bolting on hp from some of these other companies. I am not knocking the other companies, but you did get what you pay for.

It was interesting to see that Ruf did not show though for that last speed challenge were the Pff car did the 232 mph. I wonder if the 996 Ruf still has some teething issues or if they realized that Pff was going to post a number no-one could catch.

Bill,

Not bad for an air cooled car. I see your still beating up on the unsuspecting. It is about useable power and Ruf has the right combination of torque and hp. I beleve I still owe you a ride in my 3.8.

Jim, are you coming up to Thunderhill next month?

Bill, that 3.8 is something else.

Pong, I would love to find the difference in feel between our cars based upon the gearing.

Jauder,

Next time we meet, you can drive my RUF. Latest would be Jeff's BBQ, right? If you want to get together earlier, just e-mail me at chunpng@yahoo.com. I'm in town except for 8/11-15. Will be in Canada then
