Default Turbo help needed...

I just purchased a 96 993tt with K24's and find the lag to be very annoying. I love the top end pull but hate the lag. I am researching my options to help deal with it.

First option is to remove the cats. I have read this helps a great deal.

Second option is to send in a set of K16's and have Kevin work his magic on the hybrids.

Third option is to still use the K24's, send them to Kevin have him Zero Clearance, LW compressor wheel and ceramic coat them to reduce lag. I would also go catless with this combo.

Anyone that has gone down this road please respond.

TIA

I had K-24s on my previous TT and I know exactly what you are talking about.

Having Kevin do his magic on the Turbos will help a lot, as well as removing the CATS. Do both and you will be pushed very hard into the seat

For the benefit of people who may read the above posts and discount a K24 based turbo because of lag. Firstly it depends exactly what the exact spec of "K24" you have. I am sure Kevin could elaborate on at least some of the variations available. I have K24 based units which are built to RS Tuning spec (I don't know exact details) and whilst there may be some percieved lag since the difference between 336lb/ft at 3000rpm to 560lb/ft at 4000rpm is so outrageous it makes the 336lb/ft seem tame, but this is in fact only about 37lb/ft less than the factory quoted output at 3000rpm - this is all at WOT, on part throttle with decent (matched to the turbo) programming the response/lag is barely different to stock - but as I said, when the boost lights up your 300odd lb/ft will feel like nothing

You are absolutely right. It's all perception.

When my K-24s kicked in at 3,500 RPM, it seemed like I had a lot of lag. On the track I was happy, but on the street it wasn't anywhere close to linear. At first I thought I had lost power below 3500 RPM, but it was the case that the K-24s came on so hard in the upper RPM range.

I would have preferred to have used Kevin's modified K-16s, but I don't think he was doing those MODs 3+ years ago.

Cheers!

Being ever the sceptic I still haven't seen a dyno of a modded 993tt with Kevin's K-16s. I still don't see how they can flow enough at the top end to give 500+ hp between 5000 and 7000rpm. I look forward to being educated

I know we can find different k24's, but wich are the correct numbers on turbos to kick 500+hp on our cars? Any specific numbers? It's only the reprogram on the ECU that control all the power with the same k24's?

Try a set of Fabspeed muffler bypasses. They reduce back pressure and 3 feet of exhaust travel. You'll be less lag and faster onset of boost. I found very little increase with the cat bypasses (and I had better mufflers already on the car).

Going with Kevin's turbo's is never a bad idea though....

Think about a custom program for your ECU. My K24s make full boost at 4K RPM, but unless you are keeping your eye on the tach, you wouldn't know it. It starts pulling hard around 3K, and by 4K, you are pushed deep into the seat with a death grip on the steering wheel.

You kids don't know what lag is, when I was growing up, I'd have to wind the motor up to about 5.5K RPM and wait for this thing called VTEC to kick in before the turbo would fully spool up, and then only make about 230ft/lbs of torque!

I have one from protomotive. It was done in early 2000 so maybe it needs to be updated. I also have an external greddy boost controler set to 1.1 bar.

Maybe I am spoiled by my last car that had almost no lag.

Viperbob wishes that he is running just K24's.. It's like pulling up to a Vega with slicks and he says that he has a 4 cylinder....

Kevin,

Yeah I know what you mean about Bob's car. The reason I ask is I have both K-16s and K-24s and I'm trying to decide which I might send to you to go with my FVD computer and Andial intercooler and no cats and Cargraphics oil cooler and LWF setup....
