Question 96 first gear

Just a quick question my 96 TT has 29K miles on it and has never been tracked or drag raced and all gears are quiet and rattle free and downshifting to all gears includeing first gear is no problem, my question is if I don't abuse the gear box will first gear continue to be just fine?

Hi Doug:

Your car will hold up just fine if you do not abuse it.

These are very tough, durable cars but they were never designed nor intended to be drag raced and as such, the weakest link is the transmission/clutch assembly.

Treat it nicely in this regard and you'll not be writing unplanned checks,...

I've also heard that the 1997 1st gear is a little tougher... but still not up to the abuse of a drag race, side-step-the-clutch launch. My car has the 97 gear replaced under warranty by a previous owner. I suspect my car had a rough first year... it is a 3/95 build (#0090), and the original owner was PCNA. Did old Hurley do the 0-60 in 3.6 in my car? That's the rumor.

For what it's worth, I recently met a guy (Tony Littlejohn; race driver) who worked at the importing dealership (reading) in England when the Turbo came out and was involved in the testing or repairing of the press cars and he said that lots of 0-60 sprints ended in disaster with either the clutch/box/driveshafts letting go!

First gear is for parking only!

I have never been afraid of giving it some in 1st gear - powerslides are big fun
My transmission has never given any problems - stop worrying and enjoy all the car's attributes:
0-60 in 3.8seconds
