Default Opinions? -- $67k for an Artic/Rubicon '97 TT

I have an oppottunity to buy an Artic Silver '97TT with a Rubicon Grey (purple/grey) interior for $67k. It has 30K miles. All stock. Almost perfect exterior and solid interior except for a couple of leather scuffs. Responsible and knowledgable seller. Located in southwest. I would of course have it inspected before purchase.

If all checks out, is that a good price? For resale value, is that a popular color combination or will some people shy away from the Rubicon purple-grey (looks great to me).

Thanks

Price seems right for a nice car. Artic silver is proably the TTs must popular color. Mike w

I think it's a great price. The artic silver is an easy resale color. I wouldn't worry to much about the interior color at that price. If you like it thats all that matters. It would not stop me from buying it.

If you are concerned about resale, the purple interior will be a problem. Have you checked out John's TT for sale here? It is inly $2.5K more than the one you are looking at but has many mods. It's also black/black which is probably the easiest to move.

Personally, I would much rather pay a little more and get a well cared for car from a fellow Rennlister. Its money well spent. Plus... John's car sounds like it has all the right things done to it.

Carreener,
If you decide not to take that silver/rubicon car let me know I can buy it and flip it at that price. I will give you a finders fee.

I'm not much of a car tinkerer. I have the feeling that John's car would be a challenge to maintain with all that extra equipment? Besides, it has 50,000 miles.

I think not. If the mods are intelligently done, these ol' buckets seem to run just fine with a few mods. I put 15,000 miles on my car the first year that I owned it. My car has beaucoup mods. Other than a blown-off turbo hose and the resulting belt damage from the lost clamp, I've really not had any issues. IMVHO these cars are well hung together and love to be driven.

50K miles does not represent a problem on a well maintained car as John's is. He has every record since new. Most of the mods are cosmetic except for the chip, diverter valves and the suspension. These are things you would probably have done anyways. I really don't see ANYTHING that would require more attention than OEM. In fact, I would think it will end up costing you more to get the Artic Silver TT into good running shape. You will have to replace the shocks no doubt ($1K-3.5K depending on what you decide), respray the nose due to rock chips ($500 unless you want the euro lights/turbo s ducts which will add another $500) and get a V1 ($400).

I wouldn't worry about the mods but would focus on the color and condition.

Heck, if someone wants to buy my TT for what I paid, I'd be more than happy to buy John's!

Modified cars seem harder to resell (I'm reluctant to buy one myself). Presumably, the engine is stressed more and they have been driven harder. Any thoughts about that?

I'm showing more of my stupidity, but how much performance do the chip and diverter valve add? The Artic TT I drove actually didn't have quite as much power as I was expecting. I vaguely remember my old '87 930 as having a little more rip right as the turbo kicked in than I felt at any single point along the power curve on the '97. (probably just foggy memory).

Outside of the chip which will allow for higher HP and torque, there is nothing to indicate more stress. ALL TT's are driven hard. If a seller tells you otherwise, he's fibbing. Plus, if the car was indeed babied while driven, some believe this contributes to the carbon build up/CE light.

Good luck.

Sounds reasonable. I sent an email to John to explore further. Thanks for your help.

Careener,

No problem. If you are in SoCal, you are welcome to test drive mine.
