S ecu - is it worth the hassle?
Hi guys.
I'm looking for some 'cheap' performance upgrades for my TT. It already has a techart cat back system and i've just seen a Turbo S ECU (430 PS) going cheap. Is it woth the hassle of taking the seat out to fit it?
Any other recommended first timer mods?
Cheers all

The seat removes easily. You can feel 24 hp and the S ECU is programmable for future upgrades, as opposed to a 96 ECU. If the price is right, I'd go for it.

50 hp is a different animal
911/Q45 the reason I say it would be
hard to feel 24 Hp is you would have to
feel a 5% difference. Thats like not having a passenger
or the right tire pressure. I dont know if I can do it.
I put Muffler bypasses on and I dont know if I can feel
that. I can tell by looking at the boost gauge and seeing
it spin up faster, but thats it. and I lost 75 lbs plus
back pressure with that mod.

Sorry guys,
what I meant to say is that we are talkig about the 'normal' 430hp ECU while the original Turbo S ECU (except US) is the 450 hp version.
Don't know why you (US) didn't get the 'real' Turbo S.
OG,
I also don't think that one will be able to feel a significant difference. Unlike the 450hp version the torque figures of the 408 & 430 versions are the same.
The official Porsche times are:
408hp 430hp
0-100 4.5 4.3
max. 290 297
(km/h)
So unless you are driving it on the Autobahn it doesn't make a lot of sense. But then again...

Thank you all.
As it's the 424 HP Version I don't think it's going to be worth the hassle, although as I have a 95 it might be worth buying the ECU so that i can maybe upgrade later.
Why do we all feel the urge to improve something just because we can?!
Thanks again
Alan

In paul Frere's book he gives figures showing the 430ps option being a full 2 seconds quicker to 200kph -I think it was 13.5s to 200kph. This may have been a one off "fast one" but the 430ps ECU should make the car feel much quicker over 5500rpm. Also as has been pointed out you are buying a "flash programmable" ECU which you would need if you ever planned to do any mods in the future. I'd go for it
BTW its a long time since I've played with ECUs but I'm pretty sure you can swap them with the seats in situ.

Nordschleife Master
When I installed the Gemballa ECU (based on a 97, programmable unit), I had to remove the drivers seat, and then drill-out the "headless" bolts on the cover that Porsche uses to make it difficult to gain access to the ECU. Once those bolts are out, its a 5-minute swap job.
Consider that a new, stock 97 ECU will cost around $1500, and then determine how interested you are in a little more (or a lot more????) performance now and in the future. You didn't mention the price, so only you can determine how good a deal it is.

Thankx Autobahn for the ebay hint. I am bidding...
7 km/h more top speed is not bad.
Anyone knows the porsche rated top speed for the 450 HP version without the turbo s aerokit?

Stummel you're welcome to the ecu (from ebay) as the guy told me it's out of a written off car (his allegedy). I don't want any write off parts to 'JINX' my car!
Happy bidding!

Alan, dont understand fully why this ecu would jinx your car? Think i am missing some language skills for understanding your post...
However the ecu is mine for 595 euros. Think that is ok.
The guy claimed a 311km/h digital reading, that is an unbelievable difference of ONE km/h (i.e. 0,6 mph!) compared to my 310km/h runs. So definately worth the hassle...
Likely to have time to install it all next week: muffler bypass, short shifter, ecu.
Hope my butt-o-meter will feel a difference.
