Unhappy 1996 993 Turbo, no 2nd, 4th, or 6th Gear?? Help!

Hello Everybody,

I am new to rennlist as of today so hopefully I have posted this in the correct section. I have a 993 turbo which just turned 31k miles. Car runs great and shifted smoothly until last weekend. While out for a short drive, I can no longer get 2nd, 4th, or 6th gear to fully engage. It feels as though the shifter slightly engages 2, 4, 6 gears and if I was to let the clutch out it would grind. Oddly, 1st, 3rd, 5th, and reverse still work perfectly. So for now I guess I have a very rare 3 speed 1996 Turbo! Does anyone have any info on where I should begin my repair process? I am hoping this is a simple linkage issue. Has anyone ever experienced this before?

Any info is much appreciated as I would like to be as knowledgeable about this as possible before heading to the local dealer. $$$$$

Thanks!

Sounds like a shift fork issue. If you drain the oil, I predict you’ll see needle bearing parts unfortunately and metal pieces limiting movement of fork... Learned recently from Mike J that some of the needle bearings are held in with plastic pieces that can occasionally fail. Hopefully I’m wrong.

Thanks Basal Skull for the reply. Oddly enough, this evening I had the car warming up in the garage. As I went to leave a T-storm came in and the car sat in the garage but I pulled the shifter a little more forcefully into 2nd gear, and it engaged. It also engaged in 4th and 6th. I ran through the entire pattern forwards and backwards letting the clutch out enough to push up against the wheel chalk and the tranny seems to shift well. What could have caused this?? Weather permitting i'll take it out tomorrow. Hopefully just a linkage issue?

From what I understand, a piece of broken needle bearing gets caught in an orifice and limits a shift fork. They can work loose and shift ok again, people report this happening at the track as well. Some have found parts of the needle bearing on the magnetic plug but still shift fine.

That seems like what has happened. If it shifts fine should I just continue on? Hate to tear apart a transmission with minimal wear but also hate to see it lock up? Whats your opinion from your experience?

Maybe drive it a while then change out the gear lube? See what comes out?

yeah, I'd change the trans fluid. Take some pics of the magnetic plug/any debris and let us know. I'd probably continue to drive it if shifting ok.

A good gear lube for you to consider, and easy to find, is Mobil Full Synthetic Delvac Gear Lube 75W90. Do the front diff case too. You need about 2 gallons total.

If you really get into a more extensive repair, look into the Short Shifter and Golden Rod from Rennlisters FD Motorsports. Both are great upgareds for the 993 Turbo.

Why would you continue to drive without changing the oil, it's cheap insurance and could prevent catastrophic failure.

There is a transmission shop in Athens (a bit far but worth the call - 740.593.8936) that is considered one of the best G50/G64 rebuilders in the country. I would call them, even if just for a local referral.

Hi Morsini,

I just took it down the street. I agree driving it without really knowing is definitely rolling the dice. Car drove great though so that's good.
Thanks for the referral Jasonandreas, I will call them. Appreciate all the help everyone!

Another alternative to Delvac is the Porsche supplied oil - I find that has better colder shifting characteristics and seems to even make warm shifting smoother. I stopped using Delvac, and several of us 993 owners here have follow suite. Its unclear if the factory fill is Shell PTX or some slightly modified version, but since the transmission oil is not changed very often (i do it at 30,000 or less intervals), I just get it from Sunset. Best of luck with the car!

Cheers,

Mike

Your shifter doesn't feel slopy? I had, maybe , kinda the same issue with mine at about the same kms/miles. Turned out to be a worn plastic bushing of the shifter linkcakge that felt off and couldn't shift pretty much any gear. Really can't remember exactly if all gears were gone or few like yours.
