Default 993 TT PPI and vs 996TT

Hi Guys,

in the process of buying a supposedly 22k 97 993 TT for openroad racing.

the car has been tracked some and won a 2 hour enduro, info suppressed by the seller. what else would you add to a PPI besides the standard items?

i found this list from steve/old fart:

My 1996 993TT has 60,000+ miles on it and it runs like new. Things that have been changed:
1. leaky steering rack
2. corroded aux fan resistors
3. hydraulic clutch slave cylinder
4. worn-out shocks (PSS-9s just added last month)

Things that will need some attention in the next year or two:
1. clutch (I'll get the LWF assemply)
2. turbo units (I'll have mine rebuilt as k16/k24 hybrids)
3. leaky power steering pump (no "upgrade" here)

These are all very common and mostly expensive, maintenance items on 993s, so be sure these are carefully looked after. Best luck.

anything else? thanks!!!

2nd ?

i'm going with the 993 as i need the 21 gal gas tank to get acroos NV, and because the car is all set up for unlimited ORR - cell, cage, fire, etc

what does the 993 TT lack that a 996TT provides? are there problems or weaknesses in the 993 supposedly addressed by 996?

thanks for your help

I hope that the previous owner installed an aux oil cooler before he did the 2 hour enduro....

You should also check into the other typical problems that plague a 993 in general, things like exhaust valve guide, valve guide covers, etc.

Watt,
Sorry I can't help you on a comparo with the two cars as I have no 996 experience.

Why don't you give Jack a call, since he has owned both of these cars.

Can you not get your GT3 set up for this, or are you looking for a whole 'nother car just for the ORR?
Regards,

Scott

Watt,

Have you tried talking to Roland about this matter. He's in the 200 club with a 993 RUF, so he'd be a great source for info.

Good luck.

That's a pretty good list Watt. Also check www.993tt.com, it's an excellent resource. You might add something very minor: diverter valves. Also, even though the 97's received a fortified first gear shaft, they may still bend and warp under repeated drag starts.

I've had some seat time in a 996tt (engine mods but no suspension mods). Much as I love everything about the 993tt, I think the somewhat greater wheelbase and resulting grand tourer-like stability of the 996tt would be good for extended high speed running and soaking up road imperfections with less drama than the 993tt. Can't really go into "cruise mode" in the 993tt over 130 mph (depending upon the aerokit/air-management situation).

good luck

This is the car in Salt Lake. Email me and I will share any info I have. Mark, wherever you are, I am going to pass on it, as I can't get past the drilling for the cage, either.

There is no indication inside the car that it's been drilled...all parts replaced. Looks and runs awesome, but a PPI is in order to check all the other engine bits. This is if we are talking about the SLC car. If white is you thing, it's worth doing the PPI, really.

stedge

i emailed you. and yes it's the slc rig...

roland and i have discussed the matter. he has no 996TT experience however, i do but not above 130. the longer wheelbase helps, but the 16 gal gas tank really doesnt work...
and i would have to prototype a fuel cell, not that big a deal but an unknown. and with 993TT, ihave roland's and carl young's experience to draw from which gives me great comfort.

CP, that's one nice rig you got!!! Ruf Ruf!
