Default Turbo upgrade options from K16s

Curious what everyone is using in 2018 in their 993 to upgrade their K16s, Turbo design has come a ways and the newest upgrade I can find on the web is an EVOMS upgrade back in 2010 using TIAL GT 28s. All the Porsche upgrades being offered these days are for, at the oldest, the 996. The 2010 EVOMS article shows a great build, is that what guys would still use these days for replacement Turbos or is there a newer more efficient or more reliable alternative. I was going to email Evolution Motorsport but I thought I'd ask on here first. I did a search on here but its all pre 2010.

Tial continue to offer their Alpha series kits in a fitment for the 993TT. The latest version uses the Xona Rotor center section (older ones used Garrett parts; the Xona Rotor is made in-house and offers better reliability and performance) and updated internal wastegate actuators compared to the older setup you would've seen before. They also offer a line kit designed for the 993, which routes cooling oil to the 'water' jacket in the CHRA to maintain cooling.

Shoot us an email and we can get you setup with a set, email me at sstone@evoms.com and I can put you in touch with my sales guy to get you going.

Thanks,
Sam

Thanks all. With the ECU change between ‘96 and ‘97 is it easier or the same changing the tune in either year.

The 97 is easier to flash. The 96 requires more work and fewer vendors use them. Also a chipped 96 ecu is a little more prone to failing due to the mod (socket/chip) that needs to be done to program. The 96 ecu is supposedly faster though.

I swapped out my 96 ecu for a flashed 97. it was straightforward swap and I still have my stock ecu for the future

I would say to worry more about condition than year

I have a "Plug & play" ECU I believe tuned by Todd many years ago, Basically Turbo S Tune, but will work great with k16 upgrade, I sold the car with stock Ecu, If anyone is interested PM Me, $2500 firm.

And Yes, Condition over Year is spot on....

Thanks all, I'll not worry about the year too much and go for condition. Interestingly way more '96 for sale than '97. If I can swap out ECU in either year I'm thinking it doesn't really matter.

Expect "collectors" will prefer the '97 to add to a collection, so more '96 drivers find their way onto the market. From a driving / technology perspective, little difference. Some rennlist threads pointing out the minimal differences in tech.

Many more 96's built than 97's. That's why more are available

Default K24's vs. K16's

I agree that turbo tech has come a long way. My experience with my '96 TT was to initially chip the ECU and that led to poor reliability issues as the car failed to start several times due to the chip carrier. As a result, I went to essentially the WLS II setup in Europe which was factory K24's with a purchased new '97 ECU that was flashed by FVD using their specific program for this setup. The programming is a great part of why this setup works well. It has run great for 8 years now with no issues and feels like much more power, especially above 3,800 rpm. I like it because it has been reliable and it works. I still have my stock k16's and ECU in case I want to revert back someday. Hope this helps. Pat

I’ve been looking for someone whose done a WLS2 upgrade on a 96 993TT . Any other mods or suggestions for tasteful additions ? As of now I’m thinking bigger brakes and new bilsteins.
Any advice would be greatly appreciated

I added the WLS II package and in addition the following: Factory Turbo "S" oil cooler; Turbo "S" front factory splitter: Danske sport mufflers; ROW factory M030 Turbo springs and Bilstein B6 shocks. Ride is sporty but comfortable with the correct (not too low) ride height and no need for a new spleen when you see a bump in the road! Hope this helps. Pat
