Default Almost another stupid oil filter question

Quick bit of advice for the large oil filter? Can I use a non Porsche brand for that? I think it's a mahle or something/ good quality.

I know it is forbidden for the small oil filter with the check valve in it to be anything other than Porsche branded but how about that big one....does it matter?

I'm just going by what I already have in the garage so the big guy is trash if I shouldn't use it.

Any opinions?

Thanks

Joe

Both can be nonPorsche brand now. There is a thread about it.

Hmm - not sure about using a non-porsche brand filter for the small one. I also not 100% confident on the new smaller turbo-only filter that Porsche introduced - I had one car so far show some oil leaking on a turbo right after the change, and we then changed out the filter with a standard Porsche smaller filter - which slowed down the leak.

I have both filters ready to cut up but am away right now - will get to it in a few weeks.

Cheers,

Mike

I'm using the Mahle oc229 (i think thats it, its what comes with the porsche box with the 4 final digit) with no issues on my tt.

I will use mahle all around at this point until they prove to cause issues.

Porsche have now changed it to ending 05 and stuck a nice "PORSCHE" sticker on it!

i was a firsthand example fail experience using non-porsche small filter years ago. smoked like crazy no matter how loose or tight i had that darn filter....then got porsche brand installed with proper torque and no smoke

so just a lil gun-shy after that prior experience.

....on a side note will do my first Blackstone (been using Mobil v-twin) i'll let you guys know. got a deal on castrol v-twin this time around though i will be putting that in/same weight.

OK for the record this is not another "which oil do i use" thread.

BUT

just passing along

Both Mobil AND Castrol v twins are both group 3 synthetics (which is the lowest grade synthetic) Surprising.

Even my much cheaper 5w/50 quaker for my other vehicles is a group 4.

Don't care too much..it's the weight and zinc i'm interested in. We change our oil in our 993tt likely way way way before the difference in group 3 vs 4 vs 5 would degrade or make any difference anyway.

but you would think mobil would be a group 4 due to its cost.

interesting is all

For the filters if you go by part number you should be fine.

Large filter - 99320720102 (Mahle or Porsche is fine)

Small Filter - 99310720304 (Mahle or Porsche is fine)

I just had the xxxx-03 small filter and I was fine but take all the precautions to not have smoke - slight under fill/V-twin oil

I stopped using Mahle filters on the turbos years ago, only Porsche filters - but designs change, so sometimes its hard to judge ... I have a few filters to take apart when I get back home next week, will report back.

Cheers,

Mike
