IainM unfortunately unlike in the past nowadays is not possible to buy only the upper part with the splines..... so there is not part number for it. Need to buy the all column and it is expensive....maybe not worth it for this little annoying problem that actually can be feel only stationary and at low speed.
I just put some grease but it absolutely a temporary solution for few weeks, not good.
I will definitely try that loctite product, thanks Evilfij for posting.

For me it is worth it to fix this. I feel it as the car is going down the road, its drifting between the two wear limits and I find I'm always correcting the steering rather than being able to plot a course. A lot of precision has gone, it's like my other 100kmile+ cars.
Mr+Bock:
The play is definitely in the splined joint, hard to see but if I hold the joint and turn the wheel, I can feel the play I noticed, correlates to the click and wheel feel. My front suspension is all new as of 10k miles ago and recently approved by local specialist. This wheel play has only become evident over the last 3-6 mos. Steering rack was rebuilt by me 20k miles ago.
Ed:
I don't understand the "only fits in right one way for no play" comment. IIRC back 2 years, there was one big spline that fit in one big slot and there was only one way to fit the two let alone set one cog off for better tightness. Is there a spline feature that allows several cog orientations but only fits tight in one? I can't imagine such an arrangement (I'm asking to be educated!) It seems to me that I have worn splines through 2 decades of joyful steering and it's time for new parts.
I keep thinking about the tie rod pinning thread. Seems sacrilegious but it would fix the play.
Others must have been here too?

Hi vale, I am from Italy as well, where and how did you buy your 4S, because I have the impression I know that car, which should be zenith blue and not cobalt.
