Post flat battery

I have not used my 993 c2 for a couple of days. Yesterday flat battery would not turn engine over- no prior staring problems. Put battery on charge @5amps after 10 hours down to 2 amps. Leave overnight plug in charger 4 amps. Think the battery is DEAD. Any thoughts? Are the genuine Porsche batteries made by Bosch? Will any other types fit?

SilverBullet, you want to jump in on this one?

Dave, we just recently had a huge discussion about batteries here. You are in luck!

Here are few pointers to get you started:

Hello Eveyone

Someone once told me that you are not supposed to use jump leads to get your Porsche started. Apparently it screws up some electronics or resets them.
Anyone know what he was talking about?

If you do have a flat battery and no charger then you need to call out the patrolman to start the car for you.

when I bought my 98, I "borrowed " the car overnight from the dealer. In the morining, car would not start...(aka dead battery), I just jump started it from my suburban, and had a new battery put in? I had no problems

I tried that, and got a few more tenth's of an inch, but it is not worth it. Lots of sawing going on!

Have a good friend who owns a Nissan Dealer in Boulder CO. He also gets high end used cars periodically. His first 96 C4S needed a jump and the lot boy hooked up the big red battery starter thing that all dealerships have and started the engine on fire. We think he didn't hook it up right, but we will never know.

It was eventually fixed.

Be careful.

Take the battery out and go to your local Pep Boys. (I know, this is heresy.) They will/test/charge it for you. This way is a lot safer. If your battery is fact dead, they have Red Top Optima batteries for $109 that bolt in without modification.

If you don't drive your car daily, next go to Wally Mart and buy a battery maintainer for $25 and mount it permanently alongside the battery. Your new battery should last for many years.

Sorry, I didn't notice that you were in the U K. You are probably Pep Boys deprived.

I'm sure it's okay to jump start your car, as long as you follow the instructions given in the owner's manual. Don't suppose Porsche would tell you how to do it if it was hazardous to your car.

Interestingly, the owner's manual also says:

"Do not try to start the car by pushing or towing. Damage to the catalytic converter, transmission and/or other components of the car may result."
