Post Limitations of rear engine/rear drive design?

Recently read some articles about the BMW 3-series with V8's giving Porsches some serious trouble in recent racing events (can't recall which one, maybe ALMS?).

Can Porsche continue to be competitive with the RR design? It seems that with Front engine/Rear drive design, car maker can squeeze in larger engines and still able to balance the weight.

I love the Porsche design, and hope that they don't have to go back to F/R design like the 928.

Also, how come the BMW engines(high 70's) revs higher than the Porsche engines(high 60's)?

There was an article in last month's 911 & Porsche World by Michael Cotton saying just that: end of the road for the 911 concept in racing. Also says the M3's and Ferrari's are beating the Porsches. He gives no technical reason why this should be so. Just suggest to race the boxster instead. The 911 has been declared "dead" many times before, but has more lives than a cat. Hope Stuttgart does not read the article, they might want to race the SUV instead...
