Did my oil change and inspected rear tires. Drive 1,441 miles since new and measure 3mm thread remaining before reaching wear bars. If my math is correct that will be the case in another 1,500 miles. Really?? Understand the Pilot Sport is a fairly soft tire and the 993 is set up for split fitment. But in less than 3,000 miles the car won't pass NC inspections? Michelin's warranty is 45K miles (50% split) and the car is a standard 993 cab and not even a TT! Do you guys made a similar experience or did I just get a set of inferior tires? Wear is 100% even.

 

I have almost 6k miles on mine, I drive hard on them and have very little wear. Maybe your toe is set too high?

 

No, that's not it. Factory set-up US ride height. Got around 8k miles out of my previous set. Around 10k what I would expect but not less than 3k with my kids in the rear seats...

 

What tire pressure are you running?

 

The tires aren't right ... however having Michelin acquiesce is another story. I'd giddy-up with the vendor for replacements. Good luck.

As specified. Wear is even no high/lows inside/outside. That's not the issue.

 

That's what I'm learning to as well. Had Michelin before and got 8k out of them - not a prorated-less-than 3k. Not exactly great either but...what are good alternatives to Michelin?

As specified by whom? That statement make absolutely no sense. I'll try to explain why.

The factory specifies pressures for 16", 17" ad 18" tires for a 993 plus a separate pressure for winter tires, if I'm not mistaken. Those pressure, of course, are specified for a very specific models of tires and for stock suspension only. As you are using replacement tires, their pressures would differ from the car's spec and would depend fairly heavily on the construction of the tire, the sidewall stiffness, as well as suspension setup. Remember the flipping Ford Explorer fiasco? That was the exact reason.

If you are using the pressure indicated on the tires, that's even worse. Those are max pressures, never to be run.

The two questions I would ask are:

- Is the tire wear very equal across the width of the tire?
- Is the tire wear the same on both left and right side?

Not that I would ever be accused of liking Michelin tires, especially something with 45K miles "warranty", but they should not last 3K miles either.

 

...makes no sense?! My trusty tire guy but I'm not going to argue with you. Sorry for not being specific enough, obviously, but the wear is equal a cross the car with of the tire, left and right, both tires.

Generically speaking, Toe makes the most sense to me.

Just because your specs were proper and correct at one point in time, does not mean they are proper and correct presently.

I agree with this. Tire pressure could be a factor, depending on where you are setting it, but toe is most likely. If it's a bit too high it'll eat your tires in short order.

Mine is 1/16 total toe and wear is very reasonable. 6k miles and this is what they look like.

 

That is true. I'll have it checked. Tire pressure 30 psi +/- 1 psi cold give or take for those that asked. Thanks!
