Default Back to where it started

Hi Rennlisters,

I haven't posted in 10 years so I thought it was high time.

I have nothing specific on my mind other than to celebrate with you that I'm back with a 993 4S having gone through a lot of more expensive machinery since my first one 20 years ago. So I'm back to where I started!

When I was 25 I managed to save up enough money to buy a '96 Guards Red 993 4S in Stockholm, Sweden. Or at least half of the $50k. I sadly had to sell that car as part of divorce and then went through 15 years of more expensive machinery including a 997 GT3 RS that I switched for a new F430 one year after. That was possibly one of my least intelligent moves as I lost $100k on that Ferrari when I sold it two years later, whereas the 997 RS seems to sell for more than I bought it for these days. I then had a BMW 1-series M that I crashed (it's a very tail happy and snappy car and I was very dumb).

But the car I loved more than any other was that first 993 4S. And so now, almost 20 years after that first one, I have gone full circle and got myself a new 993 4S again. This time a '97 Arctic Silver over Gray with only 17k miles on the clock. It is incredibly pristine - even more so than my first one of 20 years ago.

This car puts a bigger smile on my face than any of the modern Porsches or Ferraris I've driven since. Enough power for any road around Los Angeles and I still think it's the prettiest car ever made. Not to mention the last hand built and air cooled and all of that stuff you guys already now. And I probably won't lose $100k on it either.

Anyway I just wanted to let you know how happy I am to be back where its started. Seems for once I've learnt from my mistakes! Here are some pics of my new baby.

Beautiful car and great story, welcome back. I was on the 911 assembly line in Zuffenhausen in 1996 and again in 2009. Most of the men and women working on that line in '96 were robots in 2009. There is nothing wrong with that, but there was something special about watching those German craftsmen hand fitting the doors on the 993 line. Today's 911s are absolutely amazing, but no doubt the 993 was the ultimate evolution of what the Porsche men started with the 356. Have fun and don't sell this one!!

Congratulations! Nothing like a C4S! Might want to visit the other thread on this board titled: What would you replace your 993 with". Feel free to comment there: "Been there, done that, big mistake, happy to be back!"

Very cool story. I too had a 1M that I sold shortly after I bought my 993. The 1M taught me a lot about car control. I still miss that car but only have space for one expensive toy

Thanks very much!

What got this started was my wife coming home one Fridays night and saying over dinner: "Honey, I think you should by yourself a sports car again". She knew how much I missed having one not having had one since we moved back to the US in 2015. I decided that the 993 4S (or 2S for that matter) would be what I would love the most and possible depreciate the least and so the search started.

I saw a couple of cars at Beverly Hills Car Club, but was told they may not be a solid outfit. They were also high mileage ones. I have nothing against that in general, but I wanted something very low mileage to mimic my first.

When I picked up my company car (Macan S) at the Auto Gallery on Ventura 6 months ago I told the very nice sales guy there - Nick - that I was in the market for a 993 widebody. And a month later he told me that they had the most pristine 993 4S that ever passed through their dealership. I went to look (with wife) and we drove it home that same day!

I wish I could tell you yes, but honestly I don't. I suspect it's just been too long for me to remember the action of that gearbox precisely. I think this gearbox (50/20) is perfection. What is the consensus on the difference between the two?

I asked my local to keep an eye out for 993's, and I get the same look as when I visit the BMW dealer, and ask them to let me know if any Z8's become available.
