Speedring - Santa Clara, CA
I'm carrying this over from another thread...
If you live in N. California, Speedring is a great place to get together, have fun, and work on driving technique. It's a 400 meter indoor go cart track. The carts are powered by 6.5HP Honda 4-stroke motors. Not too quick so clean lines and maintaining momentum are key (especially for 6'4" 200lb guys like me). They are on slicks and have rear disc brake only. It's very easy to "hang it out" but that usually hurts laptimes. All laps are timed and timing sheets provided to all drivers at the end of each session.
They actually have corner workers with yellow, red, black, and blue (passing) flags around the course.
Drivers are required to wear a full race suit, gloves, balaclava, helmet, etc. All gear is provided but you may bring your own if you prefer. Helmets must be Snell M95 or newer. Locker room, showers, and cafeteria are on site.
Here's the
Speedring website.
Drivers can run in 12-minute "practice" sessions ($20 per session) or 20-minute sprint races that include a 5-minute qulifying run followed by a 15-minute standing-start race. Reservations are HIGHLY recommended.
They also offer groups the entire facility and up to 15 drivers (I think...) for $800 an hour. If we could get a large group together for an hour it would only cost about $60 each. Food for thought...
Who's interested?

What time Sunday?
For $90 you can run 2 practice sessions(6:30/6:45) and the 7pm sprint race. If you haven't done it before, I recommend bringing an extra shirt, socks, etc.. It can be quite a workout!

What time Sunday?
Jeff and I haven't set a time yet but we're thinking about late afternoon or evening (I'm planning to watch the football games during the daytime). What do you think Matt?
Thanx

I'm checking on availability. It would be easiest if everyone made there own reservations. I'm probably going to do the 6:15 and 6:45 practice sessions and the 7:00pm sprint race.
I'm waiting for them to call me back and will post availability info as soon as I get it.

Ok, here's the scoop...
They are running an endurance race from 3:30 until 7pm. At 7:30 there is a sprint race that is "wide open" (14 available seats) followed by 8 and 8:15 practice heats and an 8:30 sprint race. They are also all WIDE OPEN!
So, I'm leaning toward 8 and 8:15 practice and the 8:30 sprint. Anyone else?

Hi Matt,
8 o'clock sounds good to me. Should we make our own reservation?
I think I'll just do the practice session for now.
I've done the race session and I agree with you that it's quite a work-out but the thing for me is that it's quite a bit expensive ($90)
Thanx and hope to see you this coming Sunday.

I'm going to go with Pin and just do the 8:00/8:15 practice sessions. If you guys want to do the sprint race, that's fine. I'll stick around and watch!
I think that it would be easier if we all made our own reservations, just in case somebody can't make it or doesn't show.
I will call and make reservations today!

I've been to Speedring several times. It's too much like bumper cars! And too many people drink and go drive there as if they were at the carnival.
It would be a much better experience if they enforced their own rules.
If you do go the secret is keep the pedal to the floor and never let off. Use your brakes to slow or to slide through turns. If you ever let off the throttle it takes too long for the engine to spin back up and you're toast.

Thanks for the tip. Since it was my first time last time, I definately used the brakes more than I had to. I started to get the hang of sliding much better as my session went on.
I'd have to agree that the engines are pretty unresponsive. It would be great if you could power slide through a turn, wouldn't it?

Mine was 32 something....
I don't think I can do 30 though.
The last time I went there, it was pretty bad. Everytime I started to go fast, there was a yellow flag because somebody spun, etc. There were like 8 yellow flags when I went there the last time which was a big bummer.
