I guess my wording wasn't clear. The cruise always works, but every now and then after the car has sat a while I need to use the "left foot trick" to fully release the pedal.

The cruise control circuit has a micro switch at the clutch pedal and elsewhere ... Proper micro switch adjustment is essential for consistent cruise control operation. As for the intermittent symptoms you have described; .... be certain the clutch pedal if fully disengaged. Use the time honored tippy toe practice . . . . . .

the left foot trick to fully retract the clutch pedal had to be the culprit for this 993. the cruise control engaged every time during yesterday's and this morning's drive. Many thanks to all that chimed in. I shall not hesitate to ask for assistance whenever the next mystery arises.
