steering wheel emblem/crest

While at Kahler's in Dublin CA, I noticed another 993 which had a beautiful emblem on its steering wheel (just like the 996 and Boxsters). Apparently the owner took the hood emblem off of an older Porsche (367? because it was small enough?), cut off the plug/prongy thingy's and silicon'd it to the steering wheel... it looks really nice.
I've always been peeved at how my 97 C2 only has the Porsche decal stamped in as an impression into the wheel, and wondered if it could be changed.
Denny@Kahlers said one thing to be worried about would be an accident in which the airbags inflate and you then have a metal projectile flying at you a high rate of speed
That wouldn't be good. But after looking at wheel I think the split point is the indented line below the emblem... dunno for sure though.
Does anyone else have a nice porsche crest on their 993 steering wheel, and if so, what did you do?

Ordered mine from Performance Products. They sell a crest specifically for the horn/airbag pad. Same size as the "stamped" crest. Took a whole 30 seconds to install.

Mr Canuck,
AJ USA has the sw crest for $34.00. I have one on my AJ USA steering wheel. Looks great.

I bought the horn crest for my 993 from Performance Products last May.
Had it on for about 3 months when I took it off because it would not stay in place. The summer heat caused the glue that holds the crest on to lose its adhesiveness.
It now adorns my refrigerator door.

Ummmm......
Go here:

It's a special for Rennlist Members from AJUSA....
DO NOT go with Performance Products - I had one, and like Mike's - it fell off after about 10 minutes. I forgot to read the "10/10" Warranty (10 seconds or 10 feet)... I probably still have it kicking around at the bottom of my tool chest somewhere. If I can find it - it's yours.

I've had a AJ's crest on my wheel for 18 mo. with no problems. As with any adhesive project, make sure to clean surface of wheel well before attaching crest.

Guys,
The double sided adhesive tape is no good for a vinyl surface like a steering wheel. Doesn't want to stick, especially if you've used Vinylex on the sw. Peel off the adhesive and clean the back of the crest with solvent.
Line up the crest where you want it on the sw. Mark the edges with masking tape to preserve your alignment. Use a good quality clear silicone seal/adhesive, like GE - smear a little bit on the back of the crest and push into place. Work the crest around a little to get the silicone spread out. It will want to stay in place, but use masking tape to hold the crest in place.
Leave in place overnight and the crest will stay forever. Also, it sits perfectly flat to the vinyl on the sw, instead of the gap you have with the adhesive tape.

Mike,
This has been brought up before. I believe the new 996 has the same metal sw crest, in the exact same position. This is the three spoke wheel, same style as my AJ-USA sw.
I did speak to AJ-USA about this, as they apply the crests before they ship the sw's. They said that the crest is not a danger in an air bag deployment.
On a side note, my wife's Honda Pilot has a sw crest that is about 2" in diameter, metal and in the same center position. I can only think that the air bags deploy and "flip" the vinyl cover up towards the windshield.

Personally, I wouldn't add a crest to a wheel that didn't come with one originally. The airbag leaves the wheel at somewhere around 150mph -- that cover opens VERY fast. Who knows whether an owner-added badge will stay on, or if it doesn't, where it will go...

I agree, but the one sold on eBay is acrylic not metal and could conceivably be atached with a silicone adhesive to render it safe. Unfortunately the seller only carries them in gold...I need a silver one to match hood crest.

Here is the silver one you guys are looking for..
http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eB...ory=42612&rd=1
Also the airbag was designed to deploy around the crest..that way you don't have a permanent Porsche Crest on your melon![Smilie](https://rennlist.com/forums/images/smilies/smile.gif)
