Dumb unscientific Rennlist observation
Ive been bouncing between 993 and 991 forums lately as I look to add a 991.
Ive noticed that the 993 forum is always either #1 or #2 most popular in the number of participants when I go to the forum navigation page
surprisingly the competing forum for the #1 spot is always the....... 928 forum. what gives?

The 928 guys are a resourceful bunch - perhaps moreso than the "average" 993 forums participant. Some of most resourceful guys I have met on Rennlist are 928 guys --- guys like J Corenman (modifies the polarization angle of Becker C(D)R-220 displays) as well as P Champange (does unique leather work on Porsche seat frames).

I think the 993 is unique in higher end sports cars where so many actually are not afraid to work on them, modify them and do their own repairs. I can not think of a question I have had that is not already in the forum or where I don't get an informed experienced answer from the group within hours. Very unique - guessing the 928 is a similar group. By comparison I struggle to find much DIY information for any of the other vehicles I own.
Worldwide sales for the 928 that I can find were around 61,000 and 68,000 for the 993.

I think it is true that owners of older sports cars --cars that are deemed "desirable" that is-- are more fanatical about ownership. Therefore upkeep, mods, and even general care becomes more "fanatical" and attuned to details than your typical civic would demand from its typical owner.
Add to this that 928s are unobtanium and aging. Like our 993s, these desirable cars have their loyal niche who love them, knowing there will be no others. Read more "fanaticism." I was drawn to them in my hunt for a 993 back in 2001, and strongly considered both an 928S4, or a solid 951. It was only the intangible allure of the air/oil boxer and the "911 mystique" that tipped me to this side ...but it was a close call back then.
All this, and I agree that nearly every 944/928 owner I've met are serious dirt-under-the-nails resourceful gearheads who love machines. Like 911 devotees, it's a different breed of owners altogether. More power to em!!!
