Difference between 993 and 993 rs steering rack
My local Porsche dealer has informed me that my steering rack on my '95 993 needs replacing - the dreaded fluid leak.
£1,000 for a Porsche remanufactured unit!!
One of the non OEM suppliers I was looking at was listing a 993 RS rack which was cheaper than a standard 993 rack. Will this be a better option than a standard rack for a track day car? Anyone know the difference between a std rack and an RS rack? Is it a 964 unit? will it fit a std 993?
Any ideas on the best manufacturer for a remanufactured rack, any recommended outlets in the UK
Done the archive search and ZF were mentioned, any experiences?
TIA
John

The steering rack on the 993 RS is different than the garden variety Carrera. You will have to go to PET for the part number. In the RS booklet, they say the Steering Ration is 18.5:1 Compared to the standard 993, "the force required for steering is somewhat higher. This improves steering feedback in sporting use."
Note, thet steering rack requires installation of a U shaped connecting brace between the two (2) steering supports. Good luck with the project.

Sounds like the RS unit would be the way to go, unless there are some other problems with the retrofit.

IIRC, the RS rack is not power assisted, much like the 964 RSA. The ratio may be different as well, prolly slower than normal production racks.

I was under the impression that all 993 RS had power steering, for both RHD & LHD.I know my LHD car definitely has it.
Curiously on 964 RS models,, the LHD versions do not have power steering, where as the RHD models do....maybe they used the standard C2 rack on RHD cars.

The 993 RS uses a 964 rack, power assisted and braced LHD and RHD. It is specifically post 91 NORMAL 964, not 964 RS, which is un-assisted (and no RHD rack listed). IIRC the PA must be less, as the ratio is lower ie 18.5:1, yet increased feel / effort is claimed ...
Phew! Pet to the rescue .. Cheers, Maurice

Hi Paul
Guess I've got the ratios - RS SIT (courtesy Gert for $$) lists G50 /31, 32, 33 variants - more interested in the change points in mph, but can't be a*sed to work it all out !
Academic, as I've got a few other 'necessities' before the gearing changes ;- ((
Also OT, got a couple of snaps @ Bruntingthorpe of GGT @ around 120 - wheels are blurry, anyway.. next time I see you.
Cheers, Maurice

I learned after replacing my 95 993 C2 rack that the 964 rack (US) is the same as the 993 RS...to late for me. BTW US$ cost of the Porsche part was $650 +/-
Good luck

Guys
Thanks for all your advice, it seems that the perceived wisdon is to replace my '95 993 C2 rack with a post 91 964 standard rack (as used in the 993 RS) which will enable my steering feel to emulate the 993 RS with a key mod to enable the swap being the U shaped brace.
Right, time for me to get phoning round for a price for a 964 std Rack
I will post an update when the project is completed
Cheers
