Unhappy Need Suspension help

Just completed an autox with my new suspension setup and still have understeer. Will a strut brace help decrease understeer. Any other recommendations on decreasing understeer. My current setup is follows.
95 C2 Coupe
PPS-9 coilovers.
RS Swaybars
ERP monoballs on rear only.

Suspension setting.
-1.5 camber front (Maxed)
-2 camber rear
All other settings including ride height are set to RS specs.
Front swaybar full soft
Rear swaybar full stiff.
Front shocks set to 4
Rear shocks set to 1

Tires
Front - 245/45 kumho's on 8X17 rims
Rear - 275/40 kumho's on 10X17 rims

PS. If I get a strut brace I have to switch to my cup rims (7's and 9's) to stay in class.

Thanks,
Mark S.

Mark,

Maybe you and George can swap swaybars... either both fronts or both rears.
BTW, hope you didn't get HAILED on...

mark911, a strut tower brace will definitely aide in better handling. It will help keep your front tires planted, keeping the car from pushing in the corners. When making aggressive turns the shock towers tend to separate, reducing the amount of tire on the road.

If you are going to get a strut brace, try to obtain the one-piece unit from the Type 993 GT2 Race Car as this is the most effective of all that has been offered.

Mark,
What do the 4 and 1 settings on the shock mean? You want the front softer than the rear, you could also decrease your rear camber to help lessen the understeer.

Are your tires (front to rear) the same age, compound etc. If you had old tires up front and newer in the back that could be a problem.

Kevin,
I would like to try your bar. That would tell me pretty quickly at the next autox.

Greg,
Yes the fronts are a few autox's old while the rears are new, just heat cycled.

KC,
Where did you get this bar? Matter makes one and my mechanic is going to try to get one from a German team that used to run a GT2. If there is another source I would be interested.
Thanks
Greg

I got the bar from another fellow club member and he DID order it from Germany couple years ago, I was told by him that they sent him the wrong bar(he wanted one for 944) and I just bought it from him.

Question

Mark,

You posted the following, concerning understeer on your 993: "Front swaybar full soft,Rear swaybar full stiff."

Let us look at a M030 RoW factory set up and then deduce from there. I have 23mm front, non adjustable...they are at their stiffest settings. I have 21 mm rear bars, a 1mm+ upgrade. So as you can see, the front is stiff, as stiff as it can get. The rear is what it is. I went up to the 21mm bar from 20mm to eliminate push, understeer on a short course...it worked.

I have no noticeable understeer to report, and I just completed a high speed event at Willow Springs Raceway in Rosamond, CA. Next time out, consider adjusting that front bar to full stiff, and just leave it there. Then play with the rear bar. For high speed work, keep the rear soft. On a tight course where you want to pitch the tail a bit, stiffen up the rear.

Good luck with your settings...it appears that you have a very nice set up. Keep the shiny side up!

You fail to mention tire pressures...the old rule of thumb which works is: increase the front pressure to reduce understeer and increase the rear pressure to reduce oversteer. You are correct in reducing front roll stiffness to make the car understeer less. hope this helps.

Tire pressures. Started off with 33 cold front and rear. Ended up with 38 rear and 36 front hot, which seemed to give me good wear out to the edge of the tire. Fronts may have been a little over inflated as the wear did not go all the way to the tip of the triangle on the Kumho's. I bled a little off to get it to 36 front when hot. Maybe I should have left the fronts alone? I was trying new things as I had only been able to balance the car with tire pressures before the new suspension. My tire pressures were much higher when I could only get -1.4 in the front and -1.5 in the rear with the stock suspension.

Thanks,
Mark S.

Sorry!

Martin,

Great seeing you at Willow last weekend! Nice job dispatching that 951 at the timed event. And give my regards to Pete, as well. I'm only sorry that he I didn't get to meet him while he was still at Andial....he's a real class act and I appreciate all his help (and all yours, too)!

Edward
