Seen it a couple of times. 
No, they are just attracted to the forum where owners know how to do things to their cars and are not just debating whether Iris Blue is bluer than Aqua Blue. 
(I know that's harsh and there are actually guys on the 997 forum who can and do discuss DIYs, evidenced by the OP who found the "how to replace your rear emblem" thread. Just sayin')

Tom mentioned that he found the paint a different color underneath the removed emblem. Have others also found this to be true?
The reason I ask is that you can buy these OEM emblems on eBay and the ones for the 996 are a slightly finer looking script. I don't know whether the size is the same as for the 993 and wouldn't want to waste the money only to find the new emblem didn't perfectly fit the 996 emblem's "shadow."
Maybe I'm crazy but still thought I'd check.

I broke letter C in the Carrera emblem on mine while washing it, so decided to go with the 991 emblem.
Removed old emblem with fingernails and cleaned up with mild cutting compound
Further measuring.
Required 45mm gap between the letters and 165mm at each end of the emblem
