Default Remove/Replace Emblem on Rear Deck Lid

Part of the "t" on the "targa" script emblem was pulled off during a car wash.

Any advice on removal of the emblem and replacing it? I have heard that dental floss is a good way to get it off and that a solvent of some kind may need to be used to remove some of the adhesive.

Please assume that I want to replace it -- I am aware that some prefer no rear emblem.

Thanks, Mark

Dental Floss works fine. Just order a new emblem and stick it on to replace the old one. I don't recall any special solvent being required to clean mine up when I had to replace it. You will definitely want to replace it. With mine the paint was a different color underneath due to sun and the adhesive. It made it easy to see where to put the new one.

Another vote for dental floss. I removed all of the gold emblems on my 4Runner and replaced them with the regular silver ones.

If there is any adhesive left on the deck lid, use 3M's Adhesive, Tar and Wax Remover to take it off. Works great. (No affiliation with 3M, etc.)

I doesn't hurt to use a hair dryer to heat up the adhesive and then use the dental floss. Any excess stickum can be cleaned with a Prepsol like product so that is does not leave a residue prior to sticking on the new emblem.

Kim, the emblems have the adhesive already on the back.

Tom mentioned that he found the paint a different color underneath the removed emblem. Have others also found this to be true?

The reason I ask is that you can buy these OEM emblems on eBay and the ones for the 996 are a slightly finer looking script. I don't know whether the size is the same as for the 993 and wouldn't want to waste the money only to find the new emblem didn't perfectly fit the 996 emblem's "shadow."

Maybe I'm crazy but still thought I'd check.

Thanks all. After I flossed off the script, there was a baked on black residue. I got that off with some warm soapy water and a fingernail. This left some minor scratches in the surface of the paint that I will be able to get out with a claybar.

I would next wax the area; but, I am wondering if the adhesive will not stick well to the waxed surface - any advice? If I wax after, I will have some hassle of getting inbewteen the script letters.

Also, the paint under where the script is slightly a deeper color than the rest of the artic silver car due to what looks like normal fading.

Default Rennlist is the greatest..just bought my membership

Hi guys...it's been a while since my last post.

The "t" of my targa emblem (1996 Targa) just broke off...and I needed to order a new one, and was wondering how to take off the old one and replace it with a new one...I thought I'd do a quick Rennlist search to see if anyone else had faced this obscure problem, and sure enough! Several people have already faced the exact same problem. This post gave me all of the tips I need. I love it.

I just bought a two year Rennlist membership (which I was overdue for). Rennlist helped me to research, find, and buy my first Porsche. I am grateful. Thanks and Happy New Year!

Thanks to all. I did a search (RIP Ray) and found what I needed. BTW, the script sizes/style are different between 993/996/964

I purchased my black replacement from Performance Products $20.

as long as you are replacing the script, you might check out getting a silver one. i think the silver script on a dark car looks really sharp.

I thought about it, I like the understated look of the black on the dark blue.

I broke letter C in the Carrera emblem on mine while washing it, so decided to go with the 991 emblem.

Removed old emblem with fingernails and cleaned up with mild cutting compound

Further measuring.

Required 45mm gap between the letters and 165mm at each end of the emblem

Finished product
