Happy I just found this thread.

So it is not important to set the engine to TDC. check

how much force is required to get the distributor out? I am using a small slide hammer with a flat lip which fits really nice under the low edge of the distributor . I am afraid to hit it too much. A lot of firm force is still not pulling it out. I can make it wiggle a bit side to side, but not up.

But it is so much easier if you do and it only takes a few seconds... Just rotate the engine by hand until both rotors are pointed at the two alignment marks on the distributor. Then you don't have to worry about anything when days, weeks or even months later it comes time to put everything back together. If you are off by a rotation, the engine will backfire and blow the intake manifold loose.

I took the plunge

marked TDC- note to others- need a 19mm offset wrench to rotate at crankcase

Marked reference points in the distributor before removal

Now with the new belt in place, when rotating clockwise by using the primary rotor, I can’t perfectly align them- see white mark where it should be. When the secondary rotor is in the perfect spot, the primary can only be a little forward or a little back - this is when moving the belt either one notch either direction and aligning the shaft - see blue marks.

Any suggestions?

You don't have to rotate at the crankcase. Put a regular adjustable on the alternator nut and squeeze the belts together with one hand. The belt will tighten as you turn and rotate the engine.

thats a good trick. Thanks for sharing. I tried rotating on the alternator, nit the belts were slipping. Squeegeeing definitely will help.

any thoughts about the marking alignment ? The Bentley manual states that “the distributor marks line up approximately, not precisely”.

I wonder how how much tolerance is acceptable and if more important to line up the primary distributor or it makes no difference.

Robert and Mike, thanks for tips on how to replace the belt. Mine had over 100k miles and was barely together when it I took it apart.
