It is possible that they ordered the wrong alternator?

Check to see if it is part number 964 603 156 01

Like EJ said, for those who have changed the alternator in their 993 before it is hard to imagine it "not fit".

They still have my car, and I have not heard from them since Monday. No calls, no info, and I refuse to call them, he just gets annoyed. So until my car is no longer a "hostage", I will continue to smile and take the abuse. Until then, only

Did I mention, theyt have had the car one week, and it will cost about 800.00. Should I be grabbing my ankles here or what?

If you want to talk about grabbing your ankles.. My car has been at the dealer for almost a month now for a turbo replacement. They screwed up with ordering the part from Germany.

I'm trying to take it in stride, but I'm going to talk to the GM when I pick up my car and demand some compensation.

Some thoughts that I had were:
a) Becker Traffic Pro
b) 30K service voucher
c) 911 Turbo watch

I kinda of doubt that they will give me any of those and in that case, my job is to get the names/phone numbers/titles of all the persons involved and write a letter to the BBB, PCNA, and spread as much ill will toward Carlsen on the web as I can. If there are any potential buyers there, I might have a conversation with them privately.

The domain name <a href="http://www.carlsenporschesucks.com" target="_blank">www.carlsenporschesucks.com</a> is available and I might have to register it soon.

This is a warranty repair and should have only taken 1 week, 10 days max to perform.

They have said that they can give me a car cover to compensate me, but GIVE ME A F@#$@#$'ING BREAK.

OK, car is done, he claims that he ordered TWO alternators before he got one that would fit. I asked if it was the same part number, he said "yes". Does anyone actually believe this? Does he actually think I do?

He said they have put three alternotor in the car before they could get it right. I wonder if they even changed the alternator. This problem better be fixed!

This thread is too long, look for my follow up thread about the "quality" experience I recieved.
I just hope I can pay whatI expect and get out in one piece!

I used an Autozone alternator made by Bosch with an Autozone part number. FIt right the first time and that is the first time I have ever done a 993 alternator.

Still sounds like BS if the Dealer cant get the right part number but Autozone can. I would expect to pay $900 for a dealer alternator. Mine from autozone cost $165.

Sorry to chime in here but the original post was in relation to a humming noise whilst the engine revs were maintained at a fixed level.
Is it correct to conclude that this was caused by the alternator? If so please explain.
I have a similar hum/whistle when I hold a particular speed on the freeway whilst holding a given speed or engine revs, but I have a 93 964 C2.
I'm just interested so as maybe it can help me understand what may be causing the noise in my car.

Seems to me it was determined to be the alternator fan impeller (as described by Robin above) rubbing on the plastic alternator shroud. I assume as the engine revs faster, the hum gets louder since it is connected to the crank with a belt and would spin faster as the motor spins up.

If I'm wrong, someone will correct me. And FWIW - I still don't buy it. I think the dealer screwed up part numbers or installation.

Yes, the thread did wonder a bit, but the original problem was diagnosed as a bearing in the alternator. I was told (what I believe is something else) that they replaced the pulleys, and the sound was reproducable, so they determined it to be the alternator. When they replaced the alternator, they could not get the pieces to fit properly, resulting in the impeller rubbing against the shroud pictured above. This was NOT the original problem. They claim to have ordered two alternators until they recieved one that would fit together properly. Not sure I believe that either, in all this has be a very poor experience.

I hope this saga is over, but you never know what they might surprise me with when I get there to pick up the car.

Oh yeah, did I mention he never calls me back? Well, I finally called HIM, even after he told me he would call ME when the car was done. He told me the car was done. I told him I was busy last night, and probably tonight, do you know what he said to me? He said that they needed the car picked up and if I did not do it soon, they would flat bed the car to me at my expense

Huh! If they wanted it gone so bad, why didn't he call and tell me it was done? And this guy is the service advisor, he is not the mechanic, his JOB is to keep me happy, well he failed, miserably! <img src="graemlins/cussing.gif" border="0" alt="[grrrrrrr]" />

After reading these posts and having a few incidents myself where I was not happy with the service of the dealer, here are the guidelines I try to follow whenever work on the P-Car is needed.

1) Whenever possible, DIY!
2) If too big of a job, bring it to Robin with a good bottle of Scotch.
3) If Robin is too far away, bring it to a Porsche tech (not a dealer) that has a good rep with the local PCA club.

The following caveat should be considered... if the job is really complex or expensive such as an engine rebuild or electrical or computer problem, consider a dealer. This is because Porsche will guarantee the work with a lifetime warranty and you can always get the regional rep involved if the dealer is screwing you.

Jbh, you should let PCNA hear about this. I had a similar problem with a dealer in Florida 7 years ago and they took care of the situation... Never went back to them as 4 months after their "service" I moved to Texas ,never the less he would never see my money anyway! I guess PCNA really put some heat on them because after that I kept on receiving apology letters after apology letters and invits for free this,free that...

Thanks for the advise, I will definitley use it.

Everyone want an update? After 1 week of no returned phone calls and some grey hair, I picked up the car last night. They did not fix the problem. The sound is at 2500RPMs now, and only a little softer, but the same noise. <img src="graemlins/crying.gif" border="0" alt="[crying]" />

So I would not accept the car, which may be a mistake, I probably should take it to someone else, someone I trust, I have lost all trust in this dealer.

The guy actually tried to tell me:
1. All cars make the noise
2. he couldn't hear it.

His expalnation, their techs don't make mistakes! I do not think he is willing to work with me, so I may try and talk to the mechanic when I pick it up. The alternator may or may not have needed to be replaced, but I will always have my doubts now.

JHB, if you had to pay out of pocket for this than this is an outrage. I would cal PCNA now and asak for contact info on the regional service rep. Get him involved. Then I would drive the car to a different dealer and let it sit until it is fixed. Of course if this is out of pocket, I would stop payment on the credit card and let them handle it. Then I would find a non dealer shop to fix the problem, whatever that is.

Well I have had it with the advisor, I went for the GM. I seem to have a better repor with him. (the advisor never called me back as usual).

Anyway, they say now that the alternator WAS bad, but there is a bearing that is bad as well. Part is on order. I asked if it was the alternator again, and he said "no", a bearing, but he is not the tech. I will be sure to talk with the tech when I pick the car up. The GM did say that they will QC the car with me before I go home, so at least now I feel they are woking with me, not against me.

In any event, what bearing could it be? Is it the wheel hub (964-106-051-30) or is there a bearing in the impeller (928-603-045-01)?
