As promised, here is a picture of the new pulley compare to the old pulley. Where the difference is the washer nut on the new pulley is now integrated as one piece with the pulley disc. Personally I don't know how that would make any difference.

Well, I took the car to the dealer today, and they still have the car tonight. They think it might be a bad bearing, but not sure which one, will keep you all posted.

OK, the culprit of this noise is the alternator. 354.00 for a new one plus three hours of labor. Does this sound about right?

$354 sounds cheap for a new unit, are you sure it is not a rebuilt unit?

My dealer quoted me $800 for a new alternator.

I'll check with the service guy, but other than price, is that important?

3 hour labor is probably by the book. I can change out the alternator in 1.5 hour.

There is nothing wrong with a rebuilt unit, except that you can get one from an used unit for about $250.

Yeah, that's another problem with dealers, they go by their "book" and it's not negotiable. But the bright side is I bought an aftermarket insurance policy, and this should be covered.

In regards to the pulley update, the dealer mentioned that my car had no TSB about it. Does the pulley update only apply to 95 and 96 cars?

JHB,

Apparently not. The pulley was changed on my '98 when it was serviced in Feb of 2001. My alternator belt began to eat itself up about two weeks ago and completed the process while on the track at Pocono this past weekend. Fortunately, I carry extra belts and per Robin's excellent site had purchased the special tool needed to hold the shaft still while loosening the 22mm nut. Cut off the a/c belt to save time and will replace that this weekend.

Well, another delay, the car has now been in the shop 6 days. The alternator for some reason did not fit my car properly. There is a fan on the backside of the alternator which you cannot see, and it fits very tightly over a cowel that bolts to the alternator. Well, the fan rubs this cowel. They had to order another alternator. I have not spoken with them yet (I recieved the news via Voice Mail) so I have not asked yet if the part numbers are different.

All this for an Alternator?

JHB,

I think the dealer is full of it!

The fan behind the alternator is call an impeller, part number 928 603 045 01, and a very standard item as you can guess used since the 928 model.....

There are plenty of space between the dome cover and the fan/impeller, take a look from the picture below.

That's part of it, but he had another black plastic(?) piece that fit over it. There is a spacer on the alternator shaft that stops the fan from rubbing against the alternator housing, but it appears it was too long (or not seated properly) and caused it to rub the cowel cover. He did take me into the shop and showed me the problem, so I do not doubt it is happening, but not sure what the proper fix is. I have not heard from him today, the part was supposed to arrive this morning and be installed by EOD today.

But the service advisor not calling me back is not new, in fact, that is the problem that is making this entire experience so infuriating. I can deal with the delay's, but the lack of respect by not returning my phone calls is down right rude, and I am left in the dark about my own car! <img src="graemlins/cussing.gif" border="0" alt="[grrrrrrr]" />

JHB,

Like Robin, I have changed my alternator myself and can't figure out how the hell the impeller is rubbin on the cowl unless it ws installed improperly. At the minimum, I would ask to see the cowl and you should see the marks of the impeller rubbing on the plastic.

I am not doubting that this could happen, just that the dealer couldnt figure out why. All the parts go together very straight forward and someone would have had to really screw up the install to get those two parts to rub.

Also, now you have the part number from Robin, so you should ask to see the impeller FROM YOUR CAR and check the part number on it - it should be stamped somewhere on there. If its the right number, then they installed it wrong. If its the wrong number, then they put the wrong part in there in the first place.

The hard part is going to be making sure the parts you look at came from YOUR car and not some parts lying around. Maybe you can watch them take them off or something.

Oh yea, and whichever reason turns out to be true, I would have a big problem ever going back to that dealer, even for air in the tires.

Good luck,

E. J.
