Help explain why a 993 is more car than a corvette!

Why don't we compare Porsche's hot rod (say Cup Car) to the Z06..

Ummmmm, aside from the fact that you can't register the cup car, maybe the $60K price difference?

IMHO, based upon price, the only fair comparison to a 993 is a Z06.

Having said that, I still love my Porsche. And yours too! <img src="graemlins/beerchug.gif" border="0" alt="[cheers]" />

The responses you got to this question are one of the main reasons I love this board. Post this on a Mustang or Viper, etc board and look out!

I think asking the "more car" question is the wrong question?

It is a matter of style.

The analogy possibilities are endless...Gordie Howe vs. Wayne Gretzky, Anna Nicole Smith vs. -pick your favorite looks good in a little black dress model and insert here-, etc., etc.

Torque, meaning that push or pull ("blast off")you get off the line is HUGE in a Vette. I drove a friend's stock 2001 (non-Z06) and it is a monster. If you want the growl and the wheel spin and the feeling of force...I was impressed. The time to 60 may be similar but it is a different feel. It also beat me up, and to me at least didn't feel as agile. It felt really big.

If you want a car that feels like an extension of yourself, a part of you, that makes you feel like a God on ice skates driving it (and also is darn fast), I say go with the 993.

Numbers are important (who here would still be extolling the virtues of a 993 if it had 100 fewer ponies and cheesy brakes), but stats fail to tell the whole story. It's "feel" that people, at least "car people," remember about any given ride. IMHO, the Vette, While a fine drive in its own right, feels big, a bit ponderous, and rubbery near the limit (admittedly never drove a ZO6). By comparison, the 993 feels like the proverbial extension of one's nerve endings...not perfect, but THAT good, right out of the box! I am constantly amazed at how well my car (stock!) does at the track when compared with other modified (sometimes extensively prepped) cars. That, and I can drive it home in complete comfort. Vettes are nice, but miss that je ne cest quoi that makes special cars "special."

Funny thing, I went through this exact issue before buying a new 01 Z06 (after selling a 98 M3).

I can recommend the Corvette to anyone who is shopping for a sports car. It is easily as good of a daily driver as our BMW, and considerably faster.

I think the choice is essentially based on emotions and price. My wife and I looked at a half a dozen 95 and 96 model year 993's with around 25,000 miles. At the time, they were in the $50,000 range and we ended up buying a new Z06 for around the same price.

I'm not going to get into the whole speed and quoting numbers thing. The Z06 is plenty fast, although I've done enough track days to know that either car is a fine machine for that kind of entertainment.

When a 993 drives by, I still turn my head and look. I don't doubt I would enjoy owning one quite a bit.
