Post Help explain why a 993 is more car than a corvette!

My friend and I are in a heated debate over this subject. What would be some key points you guys would argue. Thanks for your help.

Brian
Both (most) cars have their pros & cons, as well as very vocal & emotional supporters. With due respect, your rather broad question will more likely serve as a catalyst for flame baiting than a productive discussion. On this Board we've generally (but not always) managed to avoid such wasted bandwidth by not rising to the bait. I hope that practice continues.

Brian - That's like asking "why is a blonde more of a woman than a brunette, redhead, etc?" Different strokes for different folks...and then of course there are some who like all types (cars and women ).

Yes care are like women - while most Porsche owners appreciate well built and tuned "vehicles" of all makes, each have their pros and cons and ultimately the decision as to which one you want to take home and keep in the garage is a personal one.

This goes with Harley & Porsche:

I've driven both hard. The 993 isn't more car than a Vette (especially the ZO6). They're equally great, but for different reasons.

Heck, I will step up with the facts.

The 911 has the distinction of having the lowest deprecation / highest residual value than any other car. Period.

The 911 has one of the worlds best braking package's to go along with its fine acceleration.

The horizontally opposed engine in the 911 is a more efficient unit. Example: Our 3.6 liter engines produce more HP per cubic inch than the chev-vette V8.

We have something that resembles a back seat also.

In short: Performance (in every measure), resale value (#1), looks (top ten rated every year), racing history (sigh), integrity. No bash, just facts.

I can go on, but I digress.

I myself have the utmost respect for the C5 vette (not to mention the Z06), but like said above... When its time to choose the car in your driveway, its personal. But, you cannot lose by choosing the 911 over the vette.

Mike man,

To date I have driven two Z06 vettes. One on the street, then at the drag strip. The other at a road course.

Yup, I like them. Glad I spent some time in 'em. But... I have driven lots of Miata's & Boxster "S" types and I liked them too.

I REALLY need some hint of a back seat though.

I wish I had room for one of each, but I dont, so 993 it is.

Um...no flame intended, but what about the Supra TT? I bought my 993 for the same reasons - resale being a large one. It seems as if the '93- Supras have done better on resale (thanks to the Fast and the Furious).

Something that nobody has mentioned is exclusivity. At least for those of us in the Mid-West, a 993 is a rare bird. There are three Corvettes in my tiny neighborhood - one is a Z06. A co-worker owns one, too. For the same money, I was glad to buy a car that is very special and rare. Not to take anything from the C5 - I like 'em too. Just not enough to buy one.

AJ,

Supra? Hmmmm. I dunno.

I think I got that 911 resale fact from Ms. Rudy on night time Headline news (whatever Ms. Rudy says goes with me!! - Holy Moly!) ...

Anyhow, I did see/hear that from a reliable source nevertheless.

Per Mike B, the 993 wins with Performance (in every measure),

Here are the facts:

Referencing R&T's latest NSX/996/Z06 comparison
(sorry don't have a Z06 vs. 993, however, in these stats the 996 will outdo the 993, so it's sided towards the Porsche)

0-60 ... 996 4.9. Z06 4.7
skidpad ... 996 .91g Z06 .97g
Average laptimes ... 996 1.58.10 , Z06 1.56.98

I've never read any non-Porsche related mag. where a 996/993 outperforms a Z06.

Pere Steve Millen, who knows quite a bit about handling;
"The Z06 was obviously developed at a racetrack as the braking and handling are really well tuned. It encouraged me to push it hard very quickly. The harder this car is pushed, the better it behaves,"

Look, I'm NOT out to start a flame war, and I don't own a Z06. I own, and absolutely LOVE my 993 and wouldn't trade it for a Z06 ever. It's just that these threads are emotional and never prove much other than some people love certain cars and others love others. What's wrong with that???

You can reference the comparison, which includes an NSX, at: http://www.roadandtrack.com/reviews/roadtests/articleDisplay.asp?articleID=55

Vin,

Hey man, no offence taken, but who ever included the Z06 in the picture anyhow?

I think I clearly stated "not to mention the Z06" for just that reason (I did not want to mention it! ).

You wanna compare chevys "hot rod" to Porsche's "run of the mill" car. No way man.

Why don't we compare Porsche's hot rod (say Cup Car) to the Z06. Or even just compare the standard vette to the standard 911. That has to even out the fight.

Now I offer up the fact that in an overall picture, the 911 is a better performer "in every measure" when looked at within the big picture.

vette 50th aniv = 0-60 4.9 sec,quarter mile 13.4 @ 101 mph, skidpad G .89, braking from 60 mph 134 feet, slalom mph 62, top speed 172 mph. (R&T mag)

Carrera = 0-60 4.9 sec, quarter mile 13.4 @ 105 mph, skidpad G .91, braking from 60 mph 117 feet, slalom mph 67, top speed 177 mph. (R&T mag)

I like the vette for what it is. A boulevard cruiser.

No flame intended.
