Default Engine code for Varioram cars?

Looking into getting a 993, preferably with Varioram...
Anyone know the engine code that indicates the car has Varioram?

I understand it was added starting in '96 but not sure if EVERY 993 dated '96 or later has it or if it was added part way through 96, i.e, some 96's may not have it. Also, once they started installing it, was it in all 993's from that point on?

Listings for 993's for sale don't seem to disclose varioram or not- at least not many of them so engine code would be good to know.

Thanks

No too hard to tell Varioram by just looking at the engine bay. Up top big silver pipe looking thing. Earlier Variorams were NOT EMBOSSED on the VARIORAM saying "VARIORAM."

They are in all '96 & forward 993's. I don't think there is a code. Although there is for OBDII which is 660. All varioram cars had OBDII.

I think the embossing is random, as my '97 does not have it.

Good to know! Always thought that was the early Variorams only.

That's not true
all RoW vari-ram are OBD1
Row vari-ram are M64/20 used in 993RS, M64/21(M/T) & M64/22(tip) used in regular RoW 993 from '96-98

all '94 & '95 RoW & US, except the RS, are non vari-ram as is the 993Cup & 993RSR(all of which are also also OBD1)

Thanks

Thanks guys. Didn't realize the big pipe arrangement on the engine was the varioram - would have been embarrassing to be looking under the hood and ask the question - might'a walked away with the title to some swampland in FLA!

I'm obviously "entry level" on all this so what is RoW, OBD1? Good, bad, ugly?
BTW, haven't seen a 660 code yet on any of the cars

Anyway, sounds like the year alone is enough....

Varioram shouldn't really be the deciding factor of if you buy the 993 or not...

RoW = 'Rest of World' - I'm fairly new myself, believe that to be all cars outside of those shipped to North America ...

OBD1 - On Board Diagnostics - I believe all model year 1995 and earlier .. MY1996 going forward is OBD II.

Definitely not going rule out '94 and '95's but all other things being equal, '96-98 will win out. Seems the benefits of varioram are:

- 285 vs 271HP
- Revised 3rd and 4th gear ratios and more midrange uumph
- Throater noise at higher revs

Sound is a major factor so hoping to get Motor Sound too.
