Definitely not going rule out '94 and '95's but all other things being equal, '96-98 will win out. Seems the benefits of varioram are:
- 285 vs 271HP
- Revised 3rd and 4th gear ratios and more midrange uumph
- Throater noise at higher revs
Sound is a major factor so hoping to get Motor Sound too.

the cut off for separate 2nd and updates is is
G50.20 - 02693
G50.20 - 02174 (M220 lsd)
The biggest differenc in US 993 from '95 is the OBD version
thru '95 OBD1 is used w/ a 55 pin brain & harness, single O sensor and generally more benign maintenance needs, the DME has a user replaceable chip if that's important to you.
from '96 on OBD2 is used, '96 was a 1 year only non flashable unit, it cannot be updated only replaced. '97 & '98 have DMEs that can be flashed by a shop w/ the right skills and tools. A
All OBD2 have a slightly different exhaust design w/ 4 O sensors, OBD2 is much more sensitive to engine modification and wear issues.
Any of them can have modified mufflers and Motorsound air filter cover installed, OBD1 cars can remove the cat w/o issue, OBD2 not so much

Just to throw something in the mix:
I have a UK car - first registered 15 Dec 1995 that is fitted with a variorum engine (engine No 63T02668) so it seems some 1995 cars were also fitted with a variorum engine.

You are mixing up the calendar year with the build year.
Porsche build years went from Sept-Sept.
Yours will be an MY96, as designated by the T in the VIN
