Default Need Help...Installed new pads - squeel

I did my first brake pad replacement on my 97 993 Turbo this weekend. I intended on using stock Textar pads as recommended by many here but my local dealerships did not have the front in stock. Given timing, I bought Mintex C-Tech pads from a local Porsche shop. They were recommended over the stock as they were a little more aggressive overall but had less dusting, less rotor wear, and LESS SQUEEL. So I bought the more expensive pads and installed them. I bedded them according to directions and have put about 150 miles on them now.

Here is the problem. The brakes are great but at slow speeds, neighborhood or more importantly PARKING GARAGE speeds, they produce a horrible high pitch squeel.

I used the anti vibration cups from Porsche. Any suggestions? Anyone had this problem before? Your help is greatly appreciated.

"little more aggressive" generally means more prone to squeal - my opinion, and I don't buy an advertiser's claim that they squeal less.

Thought: is the brake pad backing plate just metal, or is there some type of shim between the backing plate and the anti vibration cups? My 993 OE pads had them. Also, auto parts houses sell an anti-squeal stickie-type spray that you use on the pad backing plate prior to installation.

Beyond that, all I can say is get OE front pads. If your dealer doesn't have them, mail-order houses do.

(PS - it's called "squeal")

Sounds like a pad material issue that's causing the squeal.

I am running Porsche original pads (from dealer parts department) even without the anti-squeal "cup" backing plates they hardly squeal at all.

Ditto as Robin says. I use the factory pads, without the 'cups' and have very little problem. If I used that anti-squeal paste, I am sure what very little noise I have, would go away totally. Then for track days etc., just swap in the PFC's (or whatever pad you prefer) a day or two before and your set.

I use the OEM pads for street use. I do not use the anti-squeal "cups" and normally have no squeal. The only time I've had squeal is after I used the pads for a DE and they got so hot the thin metal anti-squeal shim on the back came loose. Then they squealed quite badly. The only cure was to replace them with new pads (even though they had about 50% wear left).

Sorry but what it this "anti-squeal cups"? Is this something to buy extra or already on the car and why (some people) not using them? Planning on doing the front brakes soon and need to know.

Thx

The local dealer installed new OEM front rotors and OEM Porsche pads on my C4S 500 miles ago. I did 2 DEs with the new rotors and pads. Now they are squealing like crazy when I am doing light braking. I find that if I brake very hard, there is no squeal. The dealer is telling me that the noise should go away with a few more miles. I don't trust them. Also, will the dealer install the "anti-squeal cup backing plates" (did not know they existed) everytime they do a brake job?

OK so I'm getting ready for my first pad change tommorrow. Got the OEM Textars and replacing the JURID's that are on the car (and squeal). I've read the p-car.com DIY and this post. I didn't order any anti-squeal parts. The p-car.com site shows a felt pad and a circular disc. I assume this is the "cup" referred to in this post.

Bottom line question? Do i need the disc/cup or just mount the pads? Should i put some anti-squeal compound on backing plate? I'm replacing the JURID's cause they squeal! Don't want to end-up with Textars that also squeal.

Hi Keith:

How can you tell whether you have Textars or Jurids? Do they have different part #s? My C4S still squeals badly under light braking. I checked the invoice from the dealer, they charged me for 2 36mm dampers, 2 28mm dampers and 4 brake contact harnesses in addition to the OEM rotors and OEM pads. Thanks.

Calvin,

If look in through the wheel, on the side of the break pad you will be able to read the word Textar if that's the brand the pad is.

I'm not sure if Jurids have their name on the side of the pad.

Calvin,

Since I haven't gotten the pads installed, they actually have TEXTAR written on the backing plate.
