Post Auto auction on CARFAX: Is it a redflag?!?

It seems many, if not most, 993's for sales by a dealer have a listing such as this one:

"Sold at auction in Eastern Region Listed as a dealer vehicle"

What do you all make of this? Do vehicles traded in to dealers routinely end at auctions, or is it a sign that there's something potentially wrong with the vehicle and thus it didn't sell and went to auction instead...

Thanks all,

Luis

Hi Luis

I don't think it's necessarily a bad thing.

I know some of the bigger dealers here will buy cars at auction to maintain a supply of cars, at least they were during the late 90's when there was such a demand.

They often come from other dealers who aren't p-car dealers.

If the dealer certifies/warranties the car, I'd feal much better about it, otherwise PPO.

Luis,

I agree with Mike, it's not necessarily bad. Some of the smaller Porsche dealers will take a car in on trade, and if they can not sell it in a week or two they just sell it at auction. They gave the prior owner so little credit on his trade in that they even make money when it sells at auction. The dealer just turned the trade-in into quick cash.

Does the carfax record have a record of the mileage at the auction? Once I was buying an 88 911 and the Carfax auction records and importing the car into Canada a few weeks later showed that the odometer was "lightened" by 40,000 miles! Carfax did not catch it but it did supply the key data!

Of course I did not buy the car and as far as I know the lawsuit is still pending...

Cheers,

Mike

Mike,
See Carfax report below. No funny chronology on the mileage but someone put a heck of a lot of miles on it between Jan 99 and Aug 00!

Doesn't it seem odd that it was sold in the Eastern Region with 53,225 miles and then registered in OR with only a few miles more? It could have been trucked there, sure. But I would research that aspect.

That is a lot of miles in a short time.

But playing with the calculator, that would be a 75 or 80 mile round trip commute daily. That's not too unusual for a metro area. And that's with no other mileage.

Have you seen the car? How does it look and drive?

Is it a good deal? Enough to make up for the uncertainty/risk?

A PPO would definitely be worth the money.

Mike
