Default Value of regeared trans

All things being equal, what do you think a regeared transmission, especially refreshed recently, adds to the value of a 993?

To the owner/driver (priceless) or the future buyer (like many mods figure 50% of cost).

On paper I'd venture to guess under 50% of the value.. but drive them back to back and I know which i would rather have at any price. My 993 regeared trans in my 964 transformed the car but putting a value on it is a difficult proposition.

Most people looking for a Sunday driver 993 will not find value in a regeared transmission. And that's the vast majority of buyers.

A small number of people might find it appealing as long as the rest of the car is up to their liking. But the more you modify a car the smaller the pool of buyers is for it.

I tend to be an "originalist", so the re-geared trans just means someone has popped it open, and might actually detract from its value. But RL is more of a gearhead's forum, so the majority here may disagree with me.

I think the value more is in the "refreshed" part. Replaced parts should be good for another decade or two. I'd put at 50-75 cents on the dollar to start with.

Perceived value of a regeared transmission depends on the knowledge of the buyer about the stock transmission and his experience driving other 993's..

Rather than regear, I was able to source a rebuilt G50/32 close ratio Motorsports tranny. I did change out the short 6th speed for the taller gear from a stock 993 tranny. To me the Motorsports gearbox in my car has transformed the car entirely. There are absolutely no downsides to this upgrade (my personal opinion). It has made my car totally a joy to drive; and, the fairly equal spacing of the close ratio gears makes it easy to keep the engine in the power band (a pain to do with the stock tranny).

As Steve Weiner once told me.......a properly regeared transmission will feel as though you have added 50 horsepower to the engine. Though subjective, I can attest to that seat of the pants feel with my new gear box. Actually, I had one of the most revered 964/993 mechanics in the Chicago area drive the car (for other reasons), and he asked me if I had upgraded to a 3.8 engine! Music to my ears!

Also agree with Ilko. If I were buying I would want to know who did the work and when, and would assign a value accordingly. WAG is maybe adds $5K - $7K for the buyer that is looking for exactly what you are selling...

No value, in fact it would put the question in my mind, did the previous owner abuse this car. I guess for some like me it would cause me to walk away from the car for others it might be a reason to prefer the car. The most value would be to put an unmolested tranny in the car and sell the transmission as an upgraded on to a specific group of owners who may appreciate it. Also regeared means many things as there are lots of ways to regear a tranny.

+1. Anything beyond original drops value.

lol. Next time someone throws a Cup Box, RSR, or Clubie for sale, contact me before you hit the "Create Thread Button." I'll snap it right quick.

It's funny to hear the same rhetoric that's prevailed with the Muscle Car arena. When you talk about a regear (complete with lsd), it's value added. So much so, most other regions had a good OEM box to start with (Porsche later changed that as you all aught to know). Albeit you most likely will not recoup labor involved, but if they are factory parts (PM even better), you'll get it all back. I don't speak with partiality because I have a complete /30 box either.

As for original box and perceiving abuse......come on.......you've got to be serious. No one goes out of their way and puts in 30/31/32 gearing (with lsd) because they abused their transmission.

You guys sure provide a good laugh when needed.

^^^ You and me both.

Here's deal, i'm the monkey that will pay more for that sort of stuff. But I'm of the self-realization I'm "NOT" the typical buyer.

Thx. I mean any Rennlist enthusiast car is worh more on Rennlist than in the rest of the world due to the increased understanding of mods and value on specific ones.
