Default 95' 993???

I'm looking at a 95 993 and looking for some advice. I heard of the wiring harness issue and don't remember how to look for it. Besides this is there some reason I shouldn't get the car? Does the additional variocam make a huge difference? Is the 95 easier to work on or modify or harder?

Looking for some pros and cons. Thanks in advance. BTW, I used to have a beautiful 95 which I've posted some pictures of. I couldn't pass up my first 95 and this deal is looking very good also. Boy I wish I would have kept that car. Thanks in advance for your feedback.

There are a lot of posts on this topic. "Search" is your friend!

Briefly:
- '95s are easiest to chip. Apart from that all years are about the same to work on. Read up on OBDII which was introduced a year or two later
- don't let wiring harness issue be a factor. It is a free fix. Only an OPC can tell you whether specific car is included in recall

Have you checked out the FAQ's at the top of the page? I think most of your answers are there.

The wiring harness is being addressed for free by dealers, thanks to EJ and the NTSB bulletin. Just take the car into the delaer and they will check to see if the harness is suspect.

The Varioram adds 13 hp over a 95, mostly in the bottom end. Some say it's not a big deal, while others think it makes a difference in terms of streetability. 95's can be chipped more easily and cheaply and don't have the nettlesome CEL and carbon build up issue, although carbon build up is occurring in the 95's as well.

Raron, if you like the car and it checks out, buy it! Especially if you miss your old one (nice pics by the way). You'll be blasting down the tollway in no time!

Thanks. When you say easiest to chip what do you mean? Is it easier to install or does it generate more power?

Would you say the result is more power than a stock variocam?

Raron,

The 95's allow a simple plug-in chip that costs about $400. 96 cars require you to change the ECU at a great expense, over $1,000, I believe.

The chip I have, courtesy of Steve Weiner at Rennsport Systems, adds about 15-18 hp. That's slightly more than the VarioRAM and a difference I could feel but it's a small difference. I wouldn't get too hung up Varioram vs nonvarioram.
