Default Check Your Taillights!

After my morning Cars & Coffee run today, I noticed that my right tail light was "ajar", with the outboard end hanging open, but hadn't yet dropped down to where it would get damaged. I'm careful not to overtighten the mounting screw for fear of cracking the lens, but I couldn't imagine how the screw could come loose. I put the screw back in, but it just didn't feel right. When I took it back out and looked at the screw hole in the car body, I saw that the metal "speed nut" had dropped down below the mounting hole, so the screw, although fully inserted, didn't have anything to tighten into. I pushed the speed nut upward, back into the correct position. Then when I put the screw back in, I could feel it "bite" as it began to tighten.

Another rennlister (CDILL) had this happen. His taillight fell out, dangled on the hot tailpipe, and was ruined. Good idea to check your taillights to make sure they are secured correctly.

A HPDE check item, there since it is about go more than show, clear Gorilla tae covering the screw hole is a recommended mod and lock tight on the treads. Also a replacement body clip may be in order and confirm it i s the proper screw, not a "replacement" for a body shop / detailer.

Can also zip tie the wires to shorten the drop, as Porsche designed the wire harness just long enough to reach the tail pipe and melt the lens.

Exact thing happened to me a few months ago. Had to replace the light. Now the screws have locktite on them. Checking regularly as well. So far, so good.

This was mannnnnny years ago, but yes, I got black-flagged on the track when my left assembly lost its one screw and was dangling over the bumper ...only to get heat roasted by the tailpipe! Suffice it to say, I periodically check that one stinkin screw!

I think there are a lot more items than taillights to check regularly!
