The PC has variable speed and it also more powerful than most orbital buffers. The PC is actually designed for random orbital sanding, thus it has a more robust motor but not still does not generate the heat of the rotary. Most devices sold as random orbital buffers do not have enough power or generate the heat necessary to really break down some polishes. There are also backing plates available for the PC so that many different pads (Lake County, 3M, Mequiars, etc.) are available other than the Porter Cable pads (which are worthless), whereas with many of the other buffers you are stuck with the proprietary pads which are not of the variety or quality of other pads.
