Default Chip Tuner Question

Hello guys..

I have done a search and wanted to see what the current opinion is on a Chip Upgrade for my US SPEC 1995 993 6speed?

I know the Steve Wong chip is good, along with the Steve Weiner unit but does anyone have any feedback on the GIAC one?

My car has the Fabspeed Xpipe, Sport Cats, BMC Drop in filter and Airbox lid modified to emulate the 964 cup cars..

Thanks.

The PO put in a GIAC chip in my car. The paperwork seems to be Steve's shop, something like Rennsport, maybe he installed those in the past?

Speaking from memory, as to provide quick feed back, so forgive any errors. Will verify tonight.

Had it since purchase of car, no stalls, good idle and other areas.

Good to know.

Just wondering how much of a difference it made?

Keep in mind the performance gain is more dependent on the car than the chip. Most chip probably increase/push the timing a bit. If the car follows the new timing map and sees knock, it will automatically dial the timing back down. So little or no gain.

This seemed to be depending on the car, mods done, the car's condition, gas quality, etc.

The car has roughly about 30k on the car and is maintained meticulously and runs like a champ...Just wanted a bit more of that bottom end "oomph" that every seems to say the chip gives the non-varioram cars...

I have the GIAC but was installed by PO and haven't seen the need to re-install the original. No issues of any kind though still more fun at higher rpms.

If I were buying one today I'd probably have Steve Weiner set me up with one of his chips.

Thanks for the honest feedback.

Any reason why you would not stick with the GIAC if you were to do it all over again?

Exctly. I'm gonna guess there are no noticable gains, if any without engine mods. The 3.8RS with different cams, valves and software only had extra what...30-35hp?

OP,
Just drive in the powerband. Spin that engine to redline!

Is there any other way of driving a 993?

Just to try something new

I believe Rennsport Steve says his chips are good if you want to install the LWF on a 95. From what I understand 95's sometimes have problems with the LWF? I don't know about the GIAC and the LWF is pretty far down my list of mods.

If I'm not mistaken, I believe Steve Weiner flashes chips with the GIAC mapping.

I have a Steve Weiner chip in my '95 with an Andial LWFW. No problems with stalling.

Same thing here with my '95 and the standard lightweight flywheel. It would stall quite a bit without the chip.

But I don't really feel much of the 10-15hp increase from the chip.

What Chuck Price and axl911 said......................

Suggest you give Steve a call - few people know more about it than Steve.
