Post mileage on Bridgestone S02's...(285/30/18)

Hate to bring this up again...
But I just read an article stating that S-02's indicate a tread-life of 21,000 miles on the rear. (article did not mention whether 18, 17 or 16 inch wheels were tested...
But heck, I get max. of 4,000 miles on my rears.
I am not driving like a madman either.
How about you guys out there driving the same size S-02's as I stated, what kind of mileage are you getting?

I have 17,000 miles on the rears...they are needing replacement. This includes a little track time. It has been a good tire.

993RS,

I've got tons of tread left (approx. 50-70%) with over 8,000 miles, including 6 track days.

However, they don't grip so well anymore, even with good apparent tread left. I'll probably replace them soon.

I just replaced my rear S0-2's. They had approximately 12,500 miles on them. )This included one or two track sessions at Road America. Note, RA is not that hard on tires. Brakes are another matter.)They could have gone a little longer, but as they approach the wear bar limit, the road noise increases noticeably. I project that the fronts will easily reach 25,000 miles. I may replace them sooner if the new rears don't last as long as the first set. I'd like to replace the fronts with every second set of rears.

Alignment and driving style have a significant effect on life. I'm sure that if you "lean on them" at every opportunity, they will wear much faster.

Cheers,

Anir,
You have a 993TT right? More hp than my 993RS. I guess you are not lowered as much as I am (guessing here), but I still do not see as it can make that much more of a difference.
I wonder if the US S-02 has a different rubber mixture....

RS,

how hard are you driving your car? I sounds very low to me. With my old car(M3). I got around 20k for the rear mabye you got a defect but seems like you just drive hard.

I get about 10K on rears, 25K on fronts. Street only.

Yes - a 993TT, with the Eibach 7209 lowering springs . Mostly city driving (i.e. putt-putting around ). Don't know about the rubber compounds.

Would you consider the Michelin pilot sport tire? Seems to have a similar tread pattern to the S02.

993RS, either:

a) you have an alignment problem - as I do now on my '95 993 (10K on BFG RE730 rears vs. 20K on BFG Comp T/A; got a funny wear pattern also).

b) you are drivng like the dickens in compar. w/ others.

Ray,
I have no alignment problems. Car has been set up by a team that sets up Porsches for the Porsche Cup races in Germany. Also the rears are evenly worn out. I do take the car out on lonesome, curvy country roads, but do not approach any limits...
Richard,
I would consider any tire of similar performance with a better tread life... In fact, just looked up the tirerack web page, and saw that it does have higher tread life rating than the S02, thanks, will look into it.

RS, you may not have an alignment 'problem', but if your car has been set up to race spec, it will probably have increased toe-in, especially at rear. Track handling is a compromise setting where fast lapping has priority over wear. Look at the different specs in Bruce Anderson's 911 book, take a view where you want to be.

HTH, cheers, Maurice.

I've got 8,200 on 285/30/18 S02's with a couple auto-x's and many spirited drives. They have about 50% tread left.

If you have a limited slip differential I believe that can significantly reduce tire life. I have the standard diff.

One more point... I've seen S-02's and S-02 "Pole Position" tires advertised. Is it possible there are 2 compounds available? A standard S-02 and a softer S-02 "Pole Position"?

Mine do not say "Pole Position" anywhere on the tire. They are simply S-02's.

Maurice,¨
When I originally bought my car, it was a stock '95 993. I used to get 6,000 miles on my rears at the time. Modifying it to RS specs, brought me down 2,000 miles. Still, my original 6,000 miles is much lower than what you guys are getting on your cars. I remain baffled, befuddled and confused...
