mileage on Bridgestone S02's...(285/30/18)

How well do your front tires hold up? That should answer the abrasive road surface question.
Are you running a racing differential, i.e. "locking" diff or other very aggressive limited slip? They can wreak havoc on rear tires. Just a thought...

H20NOO,
I get about 12,000 miles on my front tires.
KC993,
I have RS 3-piece Speedlines. Can not believe this makes much of a difference.
Wish some Swiss Rennlisters were out there to confirm state their figures... but apparently not...

DOT legal Hoosier radial tires are UTQG (Uniform Tire Quality Grade) treadwear rated 40 (not zero). However, since their new tread depth is just 4/32" or 40% of the 10/32" for most true street tires, making comparisons with street tire ratings is inappropriate.
Besides, UTQG treadwear ratings are determined by each manufacturer following loose standards, which limits their comparability across brands. I.e., it's valid to compare Bridgestone's S0-2 UTQG treadwear to their SO-3, but not necessarily to Michelin Pilots.

A good friend of mine is a Bridgestone engineer who worked on the S-02/S0-3 tire projects. I still vent at him for getting rid of the cool tread design of the S-02, but as a person with an engineering soul, I understand their desire for form follows function.
I asked him some time back about S-02's and the variations. I will paraphrase what he said and try not to make mistakes (it has been some time):
- The original S-02 delivered on the Twin Turbo 911 is a different compound and slightly different sidewall construction to what you could buy on the street. The special tires were designated with the usual Porsche "N" followed by a number. These S-02's are the stickiest ones you can get and last the least amount of time.
- The original S-02 is a very sticky tire, but once it reaches half way point, they are quite slippery, thus the introduction of the S-02PP.
- The S-02PP had a dual layer tread compound that truly sticks until the last bit of tread is gone. The S-02PP has a slighly softer sidewall than the original S-02.
- The S-03 is the best tire available right now with great stick, great wear and excellent water handling capabilities. The only downside to this tire is that it doesn't look cool anymore, but my engineer friend said that it functions better than the S-02's tread design and is much better over slippery solid objects like metal plates on the road, manholes, train tracks, etc.
I'm on my 6th set of S-02's now and still love them. My next set will be S-02's if I can get them, but likely will be S-03's due to availability.
I used to do tire testing for Pirelli way back and learned a lot about tire technology and characteristics. For example, did you know that the ultimate Pirelli tire, the PZero, when it was launched, could not beat the P700-Z, their #2 tire, in dry testing! You will probably note that all testing you saw in magazines, etc. of the PZero was done in wet conditions, that's not coincidence

I've had S02's and Pzeros on my 993. The pzeros lasted about 8k on the rear, 14k on the front.
The S02's lasted about 13k on the rear, 18k on the front
Different cars, both had 17" cup wheels

fc-racer,
Thanks for the great info on the S-0 series tires. Can you please ask your friend about the S-02A's availability? This version is installed as OEM on Porsche's and some other cars but doesn't appear to be sold anywhere in the US.
TIA

This is precisely my experience (see Greg, I'm not just looking for an excuse to buy more tires! )
Thank you for the great Bridgestone summary!!! <img src="graemlins/burnout.gif" border="0" alt="[burnout]" />

Rick,
Let me drive your car. I'll have those tires down to the cords in 30 minutes, or your money back.

When my car was brand new, stock, my first set of P Zeros lasted 6,000 miles, the second set 5,000, then 4 to 5 thousand miles per set after that. I drove in the mountains every day, but not on the track. Try some R compound DOT tires, and you'll be lucky to get 2,000 miles (w/ some track driving).

Aaah... DJ,
Well finally someone else who is keeping me company.
Now, I finally feel better... <img src="graemlins/jumper.gif" border="0" alt="[jumper]" />
Maybe it is because we both drive less on freeways and more on real roads... <img src="graemlins/wave.gif" border="0" alt="[byebye]" />

Well, this is supposed to be a secret and the last time I post was supposed to be the last post here.
RS, Oct.01 I bought a set of 18" hollow spoke and it came with P-ZERO's, they only lasted me 3.5k miles(rears) and just last month I put a set of SO3's on them.
Now are you happy? Hope nobody email my wife about this... <img src="graemlins/nono.gif" border="0" alt="[nono]" /> <img src="graemlins/nono.gif" border="0" alt="[nono]" /> <img src="graemlins/xyxwave.gif" border="0" alt="[bigbye]" />
