Question Wheel alignment pricing out of line?

I have been told by the dealer that the 993 wheel alignment takes 4.5 hours and will cost $430.00

A local shop wants $125.00

What is wrong with this picture

I have been told that it takes 4 hours by a dealer. A good technian that used to work for a dealer for over 20 years told me the same. However, I suspect that it can take up to 4 hours depending on how out of wack things are, but that on average it is a 2-3 hour job. With that said, a fair price should be $160-$240 but for some reason the avg. price I keep hearing is closer to $300-$350.

It would be interesting to hear what people are paying since I haven't seen too many posts stating the price paid for an alignment only. Usually everyone gets an alignment along with new springs or a whole new suspension.

Local dealer charged me $195 for alignment, $180(2 hours rate) for adjusting the ride height.
I would pay $400 if they gave me the GT-2 as loan car.

Guys, you're missing a pretty basic thing here. Don't forget that a key component of doing an alignment on our 993's is the rear suspension's kinematic toe. This is a measured using a special Porsche tool. Basically, the appropriate kinematic toe setting ensures that the loaded rear corner responds with the appropriate amount of toe.

Most P-car specialty shops will have this tool. Most non-P-car shops (e.g., a BMW dealer) will not have this tool.

If they don't have it, don't bother having your alignment done there, IMHO.

Hope this helps.

Paid $350 before Christmas. They used a Hunter Rack and did the kinematic toe. Seemed just a little high though, but the tech said it took 4.5 hours.

Pookee,

That sounds about right, since, all of us loving porsche owners have a big SUCKER on our head.

Come on special tool, why dont porsche offer this magic tool and have the servicing price down.

But, hey then again i guess if you can afford then dont get one.

just my thoughts.

$200 is fair for an alignment and corner balance on a 993. This assumes there are no major problems encountered.

As far as kinematic toe is concerned, you don't need the special tool. A competant technician can use a digital protactor that can measure to .1 degree accuracy (about $200). As long as the person doing the alignment understands how to measure the kinematic toe with an accurate protractor it will be exactly the same as the Porsche special tool. You see the Porsche special tool simply calibrates the angular difference between the two control arms and the measurement is in abstract "units". Utilizing an accurate digital protractor is better because you can use it for other things too.

Just did my 4 wheel allignment last Dec. and cost was $400 at my Porsche dealer here in L.I. NY and worth it. They use a Hunter machine. I tried going a cheaper route, but every tech i spoke to said they would NOT touch the car because it requires a Porsche specialist to get it back to spec. It took aprox 4 hours at Porsche dealership. Dont skimp on this one. Joe B

$143 at a dealership (Imports by Day) back in '97. I had just installed the Euro springs/M030 shocks myself, and everything was out of whack. I got 20K miles on BFG Comp T/A (255/40X17) in the rear, so apparently they did something right.

Need an alignment again now; unfortunately above dealer eliminated their Porsche franchise. Will try a local independent (C & G Performance).

pookee,

$149 at Momemtum Porsche in Houston. It was a 4.5 hour job, but this is supposed to be a line item, not an hourly labor item. If they're telling you otherwise, have them check with PCNA.

$400+ bucks is gouging, and PCNA doesn't tolerate it any more than you do.

C4-Toy,

You can call Porsche Customer commitment at:

1.800.545.8039

However, I would also write a letter to PCNA:

Porsche Cars of North America, Inc.
Mr George Cabanting
Owner Relations Manager
980 Hammond Drive, Suite 1000
Atlanta, GA 30328
(800)545-8039

This address is current. Hope that helps...

Mine was free! (I won a coupon for a free race alignment from a PCA regional function ).

Normal price for the alignment (2 hours work) is $175 (Roger Kraus Racing in the East Bay).
